Working on the yard
Category: linwood
Now that we did so much inside the house, it is time to start working more outside of the house. Today we decided to remove a major yard debris pile, clean out the garage and remove some broken concrete.

But first what the hell does this sign mean at the church next door? Drew, any ideas?
image

The old turtle skeleton is getting cooler and cooler over time. It was the previous owners pet we found dead in the basement when we bought the house.
image

Parts of the garage got moldy again. We really need to make some sort of ventilation for it. It is a solid brick/concrete box with a water problem. This wooden kids slide got so moldy it was furry.
image

Removing the concrete was a pain in the ass because underneath it was million brick parts that had to be pulled out in order to plant grass.

image

I am not sure what we are going to do with all the concrete and bricks we have pulled out of the dirt in the yard. Most of them are from a house that stood here before ours, thinks (e:matthew).
image
image

image

Then there was this pile of yard debris from last year.

image

And (e:terry) spent the whole day breaking it down. It looks so much better now. He also used some of the broken concrete to build up our compost bin which produced a lot of compost from last year that he sprinkled around the garden today.

image

Unfortunately, we missed big garbage day, which was this morning. I have so much debris again form the deconstruction of the bathroom. Also, I have a lot of solid copper pipes. Anyone know where i can sell the copper at. I always hear about people stealing copper but k=now that i have my own - I have no idea where you would "unload" it.

oh man! I was hoping to fall down that pit someday.

Did Terry intentionally wear that shirt while warden made him break stone?
fellyconnelly - 04/14/08 07:52
that skeleton is pretty creepy.. you didn't show basra did you?

Kimya Dawson In Buffalo Again
Category: music
It was fun to see Kimya Dawson on Thursday night at the Tralf. It wasn't quite the same as the other two times we saw her at Mohawk Place. My favorite time was when we got to talk to her (e:paul,30882) and we got tee-shirts that she drew for us. Mine had a tortoise on it.

This time the line was long.
image

She played a great set. It was kind of annoying that you could hear and feel the Marcellas "Boom, boom, boom" the whole time.

image

She was the same goodness as always but played a little faster than I remembered.

It was weird that most of the people in the audience were there because if the Juno movie. It reminded me of the difference between seeing Tugboat Annie play in our friends church basement and then seeing them at a big concert later.

One guy yelled out something like, I liked you before Juno and she kind of ripped him apart till the point he left. I thought that was kind of awkward but he was really being a jerk. He also kept making fun of Buffalo as he was from Seattle or something.

I still love her and her music. She has a baby now.

They have food and tables at the Tralf which is pretty cool.

image

I made (e:terry) wear his little birdy.
image

the best part was not being IDed and not because the guy thought I was too old to get a drinking bracelet, but because he thought I was TOO YOUNG to get one. He wouldn't even believe my ID at first. (e:mike), my seven year younger brother did get proofed. That was terrific.

When I went to see her here a couple weeks ago, the ticket-takers were all like, "Did you know about Kimya before the Juno soundtrack?" (Yes - actually, I found out about the movie from Kimya, not the other way around.) "Ooh, ok, which do you like better, Kimya solo, or the Moldy Peaches?" (Kimya solo.) "Ooh, you're a true fan!!" (Uhm, ok, whatever... )

Her baby is adorable. There was one point where Kimya was playing a really sad song, but I was totally distracted watching Panda play behind the merch table with a box on her head while Paul Baribeau took pictures. :)

i'm sad I missed her. :(

A morning on the west side
Category: buffalo
The other day we were over at our rental property fixing a interior light that had a broken switch.

When I noticed the Fargo mansion around the corner. Its really quite pretty.

image

They were working on the roof that morning.
image

Afterwords, we went on down to the neighborhood that is going to be destroyed for the stupid peace bridge. I can't even imagine if that was my house. Many of them are the same calibur or even nicer. I wish they could just move them into the empty plots on Linwood.
image

image

I just feel so bad for them. On the one street they had a million "Don't truck up my neighborhood signs."

Very Easy to do really from what I understand it is called Emenet (however you spell it) Domain. It has all ready been an Issue in Niagara Falls. Part of the Deal was the the Senecas get so much land and over time the government takes homes and gives the Sencas the land. To be honest I haven't heard anything about that Happening in about a year so not sure how much land has been taken and how much they still get it has been kinda quiet lately.
jacob - 04/13/08 04:27
Wow! I'm horrified. I would never expect something like that to happen in Buffalo. How can you remunerate someone for their home?
libertad - 04/12/08 20:54
Great news post. That is an amazing building.
metalpeter - 04/12/08 10:55
I have no idea who designed the plaza but it sounds like bad planning. That being said I'm not a planner and so I don't get they need a plaza for the new bridge. why can't they just make it so you get on the bridge one way and then when you get off you go directly to Niagara or even make it so you go right onto that highway along the water then make a another exit down the way somewhere. What I'm wondering is does anyone remember some people from another city bought land on the waterfront and wanted to make a bridge to Canada and where told they couldn't. Why where they told that? And Why was it not allowed? I get that the water way gets wider so the bridge would have to be longer but so what they where they ones who would spend the money
james - 04/12/08 10:06
Couldn't they plow over the ugly ass shit near the current peace bridge landing?

Love the city, hate the government.
fellyconnelly - 04/12/08 09:14
I can't beleive that they are doing that... And there isn't a damn thing you can do about it, is there?

Radiation Poison Be Gone
Category: roswell
How cool is this. Someone at Roswell invented a drug that reduces damage to healthy cells that are exposed to radiation. Sadly, I could not find the information on the roswellpark.org homepage so here it as at medheadlines.com

Radiation damage is one of the most frightening aspects of catastrophic nuclear events but, more often, cancer patients suffer the gut-wrenching side effects of the radiation that is administered in an effort to kill the tumor and save the life. In what one scientist describes as his "eureka moment," a new drug was envisioned that has turned into a very viable potential weapon in the fights against both cancer and nuclear emergency.

Drug protects from radiation damageAndrei Gudkov, affiliated with the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has developed CBLB502, the code name for his new drug that protects healthy cells from the damage caused by radiation even while killing off the cancerous cells. The eureka moment came when he got the idea to put one of cancer's own sneaky little tricks to work against it.

jenks - 04/12/08 10:37
unfortunately the testing etc can take forever. I worked in a lab and my boss invented a drug that eventually got FDA approved and they use it for transplants now- but it took SIXTEEN YEARS from "bench to bedside".
fellyconnelly - 04/12/08 09:15
that is reaally awesome! how long you think it will take to make it through the testing and whatnot?

Random Pics and The Church of Ani
Category: random
A co-worker of mine just figured out that I am gay. It took him only 2 years to figure it out. I thought I was gayer than that, lol.

Here are some random pics of stuff from my camera.

There are all these holes in the backyard. What are they from.
image

image

We gave Basra a bath
image

For such a hhuge freakin house we didn't have that high of a gas bill considering it was for 4 people.
image

image

I was at the Boulevard Mall the other day trying to escape the floor refinishing fumes at home when I saw this car tire with a license plate jammed into it.

image

Then I found this squirrel paw? on the street. I wonder what happend to the rest of it.
image

Last thursday we went to go see the Libera at the Church of Ani on Deleware. They sang really good but I got very uncomfortable in the wooden fold out seats. I would probably never go back there for another show if it meant sitting on those chairs for an extended period of time.

image

image

I saw these converse at the mall and thought of (e:twisted).
image

At Michael's they sell customizeable paddles. Who buys these, fraternities?

image

There is a page in the Elmwood Village called the Elmwood Villager. I never saw it before. The term villager sounds so agrarian and poor.
image

We went to cheektowaga on vacation.
image

It actually beat our vacation on Deleware with the view of Walgreens.
image

lizabeth - 04/11/08 16:54
To answer your question about the paddles, yes, it is frat boys buying them.
paul - 04/11/08 09:45
The holes end after like a half inch. We do have a chestnut tree nearby and squirrels were hding stuff in the fall, so that makes sense.
dcoffee - 04/10/08 23:03
The holes are probably from moles. They can cause problems with plants. Unless they are really shallow and you have a chestnut tree nearby, then I'd say squirrels hiding their nuts.
james - 04/10/08 22:01
Oh Paul. I love how shameless you are.
tinypliny - 04/10/08 21:08
Maybe the squirrels dug so many holes in your garden that their paws rotted off?
