A day on the run with Mike
Category: buffalo
I didn't go skiing with (e:terry) and (e:matthew) today so that I could reset up the old server and go shopping for my mother's birthday with (e:mike). Inside the old server I found a 250GB drive I installed but never mounted. That was really freakin convenient for backing up some important info before removing centos 4.5 and installing centos 5.

We went over to the galleria to get my mother's gift. The nail studio near Macy's was exuding a cloud of toxic gas so bad that the whole wing of the mall is like one poison gas cloud. Seriously, I was not being overly sensitive, just ask (e:mike). It was unbelievably strong, we had to use another door to exit.

Random pics:
Can this be real? This coffee $50 coffee machine uses 1100 watts of electricity?

This is just way to many police for whatever the situation was with that Aldi's shopper. If he didn't have a gun then really do they ever need more than two? There were like 4 or 5 police cars on main street.
image

The smoke stack at UB south campus reminds me of the imagery in the movie metropolis
image

Does anyone remember this bar on Main Street. I think it was called Molly's or something. Did they finally get shut down for underage drinking?
image

These two houses on Main St near the Trimain building aways remind me of houses overlooking a river. I think it is really overlooking the railroad tracks.

I ate some more octopus at Kostas on Hertel. It is the only place in Buffalo i can find it this way. I love eating octopus. They got rid of their fresh Calamari appetizer on the menu and only have the fried kind now, lame.

Dork Chic is apparently back in this year. I will fit in well during the summer.
image

Damn, the apple store was so crowded. It seems like everyone and their mother are converting to Mac.
image

I kind of want an RV like this one but I know I have like 30 more years before that is practical.

Lucky for you Ryan Reynolds and Heath Ledger have been sportin dork chic for years!!!

mrdeadlier - 02/04/08 13:55
Kosta's only has fried calamari now? {sad face}

hair dryers are like 1500-1750 watts

6 inches shorter than e:jim's

I also got a big monitor for programming like (e:jim,43029) but mine is not quite as big.

I only got a 24" model, however, this one that rotates so I can turn it up on its side allowing me to view lots of lines of code. I think this will speed up some programming tasks I have had recently. Now I just need a bigger monitor at work.

(e:matthew) and (e:terry) got something too. There go the tax refunds.

james - 02/03/08 12:06
I was going to comment on the Transformer action figures in that picture. Coupled with the Star Trek love fest it was just a little too geeked out (sorry Tony).
ajay - 02/03/08 11:31
Glad I read the comments before commenting.
I also thought that was a picture of your lair with that ginormous TV and all.

paul - 02/03/08 10:46
No, thats just a picture of the TV from amazon customer feedback.
imk2 - 02/03/08 10:41
is that pic of the tv in your house? what room is that?
paul - 02/03/08 10:36
The reason we get tax refunds is because we overpay a lot during the year so it is like a surprise at the end. I kind of hate that method and would rather just have the money all year long.
jenks - 02/03/08 09:56
dammit! i want a tax refund! but that would require work actually mailing out the freaking W-2s!! (because of course they would never do it electronically...) Though I haven't gotten a refund in like the last 4 years. boo.
paul - 02/03/08 01:21
Ya, do you like it. We thought it looked nice in the store and then bought it on amazon. I don't know how the stores compete with amazon.
fing - 02/03/08 00:58
What model is that? Looks like mine (Samsung LNT4665)?

Going off the highway
Category: cars
I almost died on the way to the doctors when my car spun around a couple times on the 90 and then flew down and embankment. Miraculously, everything was froozen solid so the car and myself were not damaged. Normally, the creek I rolled onto would have been mush but it was solid as pavement and I was able to drive off.

Seriously, it was a freakin miracle. Its so scary when you are spinning around out of control on the highway and mac trucks are coming at you.

I was trying to drive to the doctors on transit. I made it but really this is why I want a doctor in the city.

On a side note, I discovered my notphone can browse all the files on my real phone as though it is anotherf drive. How cool is that. I don't even have to trasnfer stuff via bluebooth message.

jenks - 02/02/08 01:55
wow. I just wrote a post about how scary the roads were today. i saw so many cars spun out- I can't believe you were one of them!
So glad you were ok.
What a nasty day for driving.
theecarey - 02/02/08 00:23
what no pictures or video while mid-spin?!? I expected more from this post, paul! Kidding aside, that must have been so freakin scary. Thats super awesome that you were able to drive away, unharmed, undamaged.
fellyconnelly - 02/01/08 23:20
WOW~! i'm so glad you are okay!
jason - 02/01/08 13:36
Thank goodness you made it. Driving to work on the 190 today was really fugged also.
museumchick - 02/01/08 13:14

leetee - 02/01/08 12:30
Yipes! Glad you're ok.
mrdeadlier - 02/01/08 12:21
Tony, drop the "Y" in that last comment and it's even more true.
enknot - 02/01/08 12:15
Good thing your alive. Y Roswell would die in the water without you... He he he.

Hey what Dr. are you at? You should me and the Meggiebyte at the Buffet for lunch. Yeah!
paul - 02/01/08 12:01

jim - 02/01/08 11:50

mrmike - 02/01/08 11:32

Microsoft will take over yahoo?!
Category: web

"We discussed a number of alternatives ranging from commercial partnerships to a merger proposal, which you rejected," Microsoft told Yahoo in a letter.

"While a commercial partnership may have made sense at one time, Microsoft believes that the only alternative now is the combination of Microsoft and Yahoo that we are proposing," it said.

I knew this was going to happen. Semmel is leaving and (e:ajay) is going to end up working for microsoft!
jim - 02/01/08 16:02
One benefit for us, as programmers, is that Microsoft would finally employ people who get the web. I'm hoping the thousands of web designers and developers that would become Microsoft employees would kick the ass of the IE team.

MS cares more about intranets then the internet and maybe that'll change. Then again the music and product divisions of Sony have been at each others throats for years, so maybe the web people at Yahoocrosoft would just end up similarly locked down.
jim - 02/01/08 14:11
It's hard to see what this will bring either party. If Yahoo hasn't been able to realize success (in terms of market perception - no denying they are successful in many ways) through their vision of the web, they're not going to do any better being dragged down by Microsoft's need to protect its cash cows - Windows and Office.

I see a chimera forming that is going to take years to straighten out and make fit well. This is Microsoft's one chance to buy their way back into paid search, and it seems like a pretty risky thing. All the press release talks about is synergy. And we know how well that goes... AOL/Time Warner.

Microsoft's new MSN Live Yahoo Personalized Home Page Search! (TM)

It's going to be a weird day when yahoo.com redirects to live.com.
drew - 02/01/08 11:23
If this goes through I will finish my cup of google kool-aid (I've already started drinking it) and switch my yahoo mail/calendar account to gmail. Microsoft has frustrated me too much.
mrdeadlier - 02/01/08 11:19
Someday we'll drive our Microsoft to the Microsoft to get more Microsoft.
ajay - 02/01/08 10:36
Too early to call...

HotMail was bought for $400M ; this is 110x bigger than that. There is no way that Microsoft will insist on converting our hundreds of thousands of servers to Windows; they might as well just put that $44B in a pile and light it.

(e:paul) , Semel wasn't doing anything anyways, so his departure doesn't mean much.

Interesting times ahead... :-)
jim - 02/01/08 09:49
Great. Microsoft is going to own Flickr now.

What I don't get is how the technology will be merged. It took MS like 3 or 4 years to migrate Hotmail off Unix to MS servers. How many decades is it going to take to transition Yahoo from PHP to .NET/C#? Yuck. Microsoft will end up choking on that one.
