The Third Magisterium
Category: culture
Greg Knauss:

"Starting now, I do. I declare myself the world's primary expert in questions so stupid that they lack any sort of meaning other than reasonably correct grammar."

An Entirely Other Day

That was pretty enjoyable.

Work
Category: work
I'm having a lunch meeting with a new prospective client today. I'm actually starting to love doing presentations. Maybe with a bit more practice I'll even get to be good at it :) Just need to relax. Like usual! Too high strung and nervous, breathe in breathe out.

jim - 11/19/07 12:36
I'm a freaking idiot, I went to get my haircut before my meeting, and forgot my wallet and so couldn't pay for it. Then I forgot to charge my phone so it's dying and I've been trying to find a phone to use to call James for emergency assistance and to call my client :)

Oh well spent my last buck on a coffee and at least I have wireless internet to rearrange my meeting schedule to meet at a coffee shop instead of out for lunch.

Yay technology :)
mrmike - 11/19/07 10:15
Eventually, you just stop thinking and do it. I've been having to perform a lot lately and if I just talk I'm good. The moment I realize the eyes are on me, that's where things get dicey.

Save the Day
Category: estrip
The (e:strip) holiday dinner will be on Dec 13th, a Thursday. Save the day, and be prepared to sign up (it's a potluck) sometime after Thanksgiving (no more planning for now).

See you on the other side of turkey day!

8 Terabyte Storage Array
Category: computers
12 SATA 1TB Drives ($300 ea)
1 12-bay rack mountable SATA enclosure ($1200)
1 4x SAS Controller w/ Battery Backup ($1000)

Hooked up to a Solaris host with Raid-Z double parity ZFS, and two online spare drives for live failover and rebuilding.

= 8 terabyte of doubly redundant storage for ~$6000.

Biggest problem? How to back the sucker up. 20 tapes a night?

jim - 11/16/07 14:59
But really, I don't know how to back it up. I think I'll tell them just buy lots of insurance so that if the place burns down they can afford to start from scratch :)
jim - 11/16/07 14:58
48 hours worth of DVD quality digital video a day, plus a copy of the same stuff down converted to streamable FLV.
paul - 11/16/07 14:47
What on earth are you serving that requires that?
jim - 11/16/07 12:58
no just something I was working on today
jbeatty - 11/16/07 12:57
Geez I hope I'm not your secret santa :)

mike - 11/17/07 12:23
my family has a pretty large selection of folding chairs i believe i could bring, excpet last time pual borrowed a folding table , it never returned and was supposedly stolen? So i'll try to convince them it will be safe this time
jim - 11/17/07 12:07
James and I have a folding card table we can bring, but maybe if someone else has folding chairs?
paul - 11/16/07 20:30
Baby sounds fine.
paul - 11/16/07 20:30
The week of the 3rd the 7th is not so good for me. I have to be at work by 8:30 everyday which is way unusual for me, so I want to go to bed by like 10PM. Dec 13th sounds good to me. I think we will also need someone to volunteer an extra table.
jim - 11/16/07 17:19
Thanks, Mike, fixed the dates.

Looks like Thu Dec 13th is least conflictive so far.
mike - 11/16/07 17:14
whenver is prolly fine for me BUT DEcember 3 is a Monday not a Tuesday. So do you mean monday the 3 or tuesday the 4?
bridgette - 11/16/07 11:39
i think that would be fun! I can probably find a sitter for my baby girl but it might be nice to bring her with me. What would you guys think?
mrmike - 11/16/07 09:19
I'm in for the Tuesdays or Thursdays
jim - 11/16/07 00:15
I'm going to leave everything a bit up in the air for a couple days until everyone's had a chance to weigh in and Paul and crew decide what's good for them in terms of hosting.
drew - 11/16/07 00:00
I would prefer the Thurs or Friday dates.
jim - 11/15/07 23:45
No, not too hasty, I just know from previous experience not to try to compete! I just didn't think to check until you mentioned it, and I'm very glad you brought up hockey.
chico - 11/15/07 23:42
zombiejames -- Indeed I am a product of the glacier carcass, such as it is.

(e:jim) -- Are you being too hasty about the sporting event constraint? I'm starting to feel bad about even mentioning the hockey game now. Apologies!
jim - 11/15/07 23:07
Updated list of the only possible days:

Tue Dec 03
Fri Dec 07
Tue Dec 11
Thu Dec 13

For a three week period those 4 days are the only days without a sporting event in the evening.
james - 11/15/07 22:36
The Islanders?

Oh man! Don't tell me you are from that glacier carcass island?
(sorry, I am from just north of Westchester where the most despised creature, after the New Jerseyite, is the Long Islander.)

I am free what ever day you tell me to be.
jim - 11/15/07 22:35
Tinypliny, I'm sorry that you can't make it :(

I'd push it back later but having it to close to Christmas is something I'm not too sure about?
chico - 11/15/07 22:28
Au contraire! I am no Sabres fan. I, my friend, am a devout fan of the New York Islanders, and I resent the implied "Sabres fan" label. ;-) ;-)
jim - 11/15/07 22:18
Oh I forgot to check for sports games, let me make up a list of possible dates considering Sabres' fans needs :)
chico - 11/15/07 22:15
I think 12/5 works for me but 12/12 I have Islanders-Sabres tickets.
tinypliny - 11/15/07 22:09
I am at a conference the first week and going off for a writing-study break to Calfornia the second week. :(( From what I heard this week, I might need to submit my proposal (1st 100 pages) late January.
jim - 11/15/07 21:34
This will be either the first or second week of December, Wed the 5th or 12th are my two possible target dates unless that is a bad day of the week for people.
jbeatty - 11/15/07 21:31
I would love to come and cook something, I have however committed myself to working new years eve. as long as it isn't then or Christmas week I'm in.
