New years eve 2011Category: holidays
The new years party 2011 was awesome. It was the first party where I only spent lime an hour cleaning up. Some highlights:

- The tabletstravaganza on the couch with (e:Heidi) and (e:Chris). I was nervous at firs that I would regret the nook when I saw the other android tablets but instead it reenforced my feelings that t was the best electronics purchase I ever made. The bigger ones were too heavy and big. The screens were also crappy for reading which is what I care about most. The windows 7 one almost seemed like a joke. The interface was lame. For example, when you pressed an input to type, instead of Beijing up the keyboard a you would expect, it brought up a keyboard icon that you! have to press to bringup the keyboard. It was so freaking frustrating. Plus just imagineho slow it would get over time running windows.
- discussing enlightenment linux desktop with (e:uncutsanifkush). Too bad Tim was gone at that point.
- dealing with Geoffrey's supposed Volvo car robbery this morning. Turned out it was parked a couple blocks away and he forgot, but not before an hour long freakout. I used that time to clean the kitchen.
- meeting Eric's friend Lara. I wish I got to talk with her some more.
- Drinking the pink nuvo stuff that (e:metalpeter) brought.
- Realized that we did in fact have a snookie of our very own, she just needed a little mike plus tumeric and paprika rub skin treatment and hairspray. She accompanied ball drop.
- Droping the lit up ball down the stairwell, it is my very favorite part of new years. Next year I am going to make it crazier. Maybe a countdown clock or drop it off the roof.

Nexus 1 froyo 2.2 vs rooted nook with 2.1 eclair speedCategory: hardware
The rooted nook color is so much easier to use than my phone because of the screensize that it appears to me to be faster, yet according to the quadrant benchmark it is in fact slower, although faster than a non 2.2 Nexus One.
Games like angry birds seem snappy as can be. I guess for the stuff I do with it speed doesn't matter and if I could trade some speed for battery life it seems perfectly worth it and typing on it is fantastic. This is definitely the perfect size for me.
I signed up for a dev account today. I am so curious how you are supposed to distribute apps considering there is no normal android market yet. The official specs are in this ::READ PDF::

My rooted nookCategory: hardware
After playing around a bit I have real android running on my nook with the gingerbread keyboard that spell corrects, the marketplace and the kindle app along with the estrip app. Surprisingly most of the apps I tried work fine at tablet size. I guess it really just depends on the app developers decisions for sizing the interface. Stupidly, I have not gotten good at the screen capture app which requires you to hit volume down as part of it. I keep doing it in the wrong order.

And thus was only $249 compared to like $400-600 plus Monthly fee for a galaxy tablet.

Omg its so freaking good. You can see it tonight. The Samsung tablet has more features like camera, GPS, its own 3g connection but my phone already has all that and its always in my pocket and more portable. The phone easily shares its internet connection with the nook so that solves the connection issue and costs me nothing more per month. In fact I typing this on the nook while walking down Cleveland toward Blue Fin for lunch.
Typing in it is the best software keyboardbtyping experience I have ever had. I mean I can do it while walking.

Nook ColorCategory: hardware
What started as a $10 gift card from work that I used to purchase the "Grep pocket reference"
turned into an I need an ebook reader. While its nice that our google and iphones can read books for maximum portabilty. Sometimes it is nice to have a larger screen surface.

I didn't want an ipad because they are just too darn freakin big and heavy. For me 7 inches is enough. Plus my phone already acts as a mobile hotspot, has a GPS, camera etc ad this thing wa only $248 vs $400-$600 with the ipad. I was a little torn between the nook color and the older monochrome e-ink readers like the regular nook or the kindle that have much mire amazing battery life.
In fact I argued with (e:enknot) about this one night for a while and I still feel like e-ink is easier to read but I like that the device doubles as a larger screen web browser. It also does music, pandora etc and being that it is actually android based I should be able to get the kindle app on here as well at some point.
Supposedly it works with the epub books from the library. I found it interesting that books really get checked out from the library meaning that so ebook (e:terry) wanted was checked out by someone else therefore not available.
I wrote a whole surebert suite for publishing ebooks in epub format. That will soon allow me to release a new feature for estrip were you can download your entire journal as one big ebook for safe keeping. The format is quite interesting. It is basically a zip file with a manifest anda bunch of related media and xhtml files.
So typing on this size screen is perfect? I can almost type a fast as if this were a real keyboard.
Oh one last thing is that magazines are freakin cheap like $1-$2/month but I couldn't find the linux magazines I wanted yet.

I don't get why the kindle can't just do the open epub format. Its seems like such a pain to have to convert considering so many books are already in that format.

I get ebooks & audio books from my home library's consortium. The library just got five Kindles today. :::link::: Kinda neat concept about the digital rights check-in/check-out. I'm *this close* to buying my first kindle book. Immediate gratification for $7.99...and it's a short book so if I hate reading it on my laptop or phone, I won't be too annoyed.
I'm looking forward to the ability to d/l my whole (e:strip) journal. I did that recently with my LiveJournal. Since I'm not updating the LJ, I'm gonna stop paying for it, but didn't want to do that until I could grab the five years of content.

If I would have Know that Efrat's dress was pet-able that might have led to some fun if she is who I think she was , HA... I have no idea who Lourdes is but this explanation is still a help.......
(e:paul) - I wish that I was able to give a geeky explanation of why the EFL (Enlightenment Foundation Libraries) rocked and why they were better than what the kids from Gnome and KDE and Xfce etc were coming up with. EFL is efficient fast and light. Compatible with gnome. Conforms to Linux Desktop standards. Hell, I can't do a good job of talking about e17 even when I'm sober.
I'm glad you found it interesting.
Thank you, (e:PMT), for hosting a lovely party! Nerding about the tablets was a highlight for me, too. We kinda did that instead of talking to Eric & Lara :-/
(e:metalpeter) - yes, the woman with black hair and fuchsia top with great cleavage is Jolene, (e:puddlediving)'s roommate. The woman with the pet-able black velvet dress is Efrat, accent on the second syllable. The woman with the novella name is Lourdes.
I think but not sure Lara is the blond with the Polka dots who was wearing the big Feather..... You can't tell it in the photos but she looks pretty well stacked if you know what I mean trying to keep it classy she is pretty cute... In Terms of the Person with the Novella name I don't know who you mean but the girl with the arm tattoo is pretty hot as well.... Now the Lady (again lovely and stacked) with red top on is named Joleen (not sure how it spelled) Kinda like the song, but I think I know the song from a remake and not the original artist......
I admit I may have this wrong and aren't sure who that other person you are talking about is.... Maybe someone else who was there will read this and update whom everyone is.......
Atleast I learned that I hate hairspray. thank you, mike.
lol
So Lara is the one with the blazer and tie?
I LOVED the ball drop - its an awesome concept. :)
I am not so sad I missed the tabletstravaganza because really, my core interest is only in tablets with styluses and PDF markup and of course any tablet that can be loaded with software like mypaint and I can use the stylus to draw precisely.
I have been trying out your nokia a bit.. Thus far, I have just learnt to navigate because I have been running analyses in R all day...
Who is lara? The one in the black velvet dress who was with that girl who had the classic novella name (that I can't remember now!) and the gorgeous buffalo tattoo?
Geoffrey nearly matched that banned bloke (Chris?) yesterday. I wish your organ had been okay - atleast all his craziness would have been translated to good music instead of making it weird for everyone...
glad I'm not the only one posting pictures......... That guy you mentioned is crazy or at least drunk he is.... On a side note hopefully Lara finds the pictures I posted of her on here... It was a good time
I like how you did the bulletins.................
