No more Allentown Athletix

General Information
After 12 years the club is permanently closing on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 5 pm. It's been a great run and we are grateful for everyone that supported our franchise over the years. The property has been sold, but the new owner will convert the property to other purposes; it will not remain a health club. Anyone that has prepaid for membership and/or locker rentals will receive a pro-rated refund by March 15, 2011.

Members with rental lockers should remove their belongings by the close of business on December 31, 2010. Any remaining items will be donated to local charities.

Much equipment has already been sold, but there is still some equipment, accessories, furniture, and many miscellaneous items throughout the club for sale. Almost anything you see is available for purchase at great prices.

The club phone numbers will be disconnected on December 31, 2010. If you wish to reach us, please use the "Contact Us" tab on this website.

We wish our current and former members the very best and look forward to our paths crossing in the future. Thank you!

It's too bad they have to close. Seems like they were probably struggling to hold on for a long time. In January I will be joining JCC. I'm sure many of the people I knew at Allentown will now be JCC members. Former members of Allentown are being offered a discount, not sure if that is a better one than is offered to RPCI employees.

has anyone been to KC's fitness? it's on symphony circle, in an old church. they have no relationship to the church except for paying for the space.

its a small place, but may fit some people's needs. i would recommend shawn and kevin as personal trainers.
matthew - 12/19/10 12:10
I refuse to go to the jcc. Not because of my views on religion but because its a fucking dirty, disgusting organization. i worked there and i will never step foot in that building again. my friend Ami is also looking for a new gym. She also worked at the jcc in the past and she agrees with me about never giving money to the place. There are other gyms in the neighborhood and we are looking into them.
libertad - 12/19/10 08:31
Now I will feel slightly guilty for joining but it isn't enough to keep me from doing it. I would never work out if I had to take a bus out of my way to do it. It's hard enough to make the time to go to the gym in the first place. If Allentown were to stay open, after what you said Paul, I would pay whatever it would have cost me. I have been feeling so crappy since I haven't been working out that I just can't afford to boycott somewhere because a hopefully small fraction of my money will go to things I do not agree with. I can't afford or have the space for a home gym either.
paul - 12/18/10 12:27
That should "I refuse" not "I also refuse". It used to be paragraph 2 but I deleted some stuff.
paul - 12/18/10 12:02
I also refuse to contribute money to religious organizations. Its just means my money ends up going to support causes I don't support. Especially in this case where the money could end up in Israel supporting the unjust occupation. I would feel like such a hypocrite in this case, where I believe our support for Israel has made us the world's target for terrorists.

Just look at the JCC of North America's israel support page :::link::: " Building Bridges Between Israel and North American JCCs" Matt said when he worked there they made no secret of our local JCC supporting Israel directly with fundraisers, etc.

Nice Photos, I like the trees reflected off the water from the island......................
uncutsaniflush - 12/16/10 06:25
(e:libertad) - I'm with you. Winter doesn't make for good bike riding weather. Thanks for the explanation of the title.
oda - 12/15/10 22:35
gorgeous!

absolutely.
libertad - 12/15/10 19:02
Thanks guys. I really wasn't so sure about labeling it the "last good day" cause it does seem kind of definite but it really was the last day I took a leisurely ride. Now my bike is all cleaned and sitting in my living room. I'm not much of a winter person so even though I think it is incredibly beautiful I don't often take any photos of it. I really kind of want to because they make really awesome Christmas cards.

Sigh, I can't wait until the days start getting longer!
tinypliny - 12/15/10 17:48
I can't pick a favourite! Thanks for the wonderful photos!! Love them... well maybe the ones with the reflections better than the rest... but wait, I like the rocks and the desolation too..

Like walt said, I hope you capture some more this winter!
uncutsaniflush - 12/14/10 22:11
You captured great beauty on that day. Thanks for sharing the photos with us. But I do hope that you are wrong and there will be good days with great beauty for you (and by extension all of us) to see even in the deepest Wintertime.

Bubble wrap and packaging peanuts
Does anyone want any of this? I think I might put it on craigslist. I really do not have enough room to keep hoarding everything. I also have a garbage bag full of plastic grocery containers that are not recyclable in Buffalo yet. I think I might have to hold them until April when the recycling changes occur.

What is a Woop Woop - are they suede shiraz-coloured dancing shoes all the way from Australia?!

Dying to go back to the gym!
I can't wait to start working out again. This was only 15months ago and I had much better muscle tone and definition. I couldn't afford the gym membership and now I am really dying to go back. Hopefully the gym I want to go with will give me a reasonable deal when I sign up after the holidays. If not, I'm out.

I also can't wait to go see my fam in FL. My skins is dying for some sunlight. Psoriasis hates the sun. At the same time I love shade and dark shadows.

tinypliny - 12/09/10 03:25
LOL You may be lazy, but I am SUPER-lazy - so I guess I might as well ditch all the yoga plans. I looked at all those pictures they have up on their Bikram yoga site (yes, this is the "hot one") and just looking at them gives me a complex. How can 20 people in the same room all have "the perfectly sculpted body"?! They say that no experience or flexibility is required but I think that is a way of reassuring people rather than the truth... My brother can easily stand on his head for more than 10 minutes and he calls himself a "beginner". yeah right.
mike - 12/08/10 23:49
me and my friend jill kinda got embarassed/forced out of a bikram yoga class (that is the hot one right?). I felt super overwhelmed cuz everyone else was so good but at the same time we are kinda lazy people to begin with so we prolly wouldn't have stuck to it very long anyway.
tinypliny - 12/06/10 21:31
I am thinking that yoga/hip-hop fitness could help me with better dancing form in salsa. One of my salsa instructors does yoga and the other does hip hop and both are perfect dancers. I could just watch them in wonder for an infinite period of time...
tinypliny - 12/06/10 21:28
I am considering joining bikram yoga classes at Evolation Yoga studio on Elmwood & Delevan... but I am dilly-dallying because it doesn't seem as appealing as more salsa and hip hop...

Mason Pearson Brush
I want this brush so bad. It only costs $130 and (e:mike) won't let me have it.

Why settle for an ordinary hairbrush when you can have one that will give you a lustrous, healthier head of hair every time you use it? Mason Pearson handcrafts this brush with a blend of the finest boar and nylon bristles. Special spiral tufts draw your hair’s natural oils along the entire length of the hair shaft for added strength and a healthy shine. The pneumatic cushion stimulates the scalp without irritation. True, this brush is expensive, but it's worth every penny.
Features a combination of natural boar bristles and nylon bristles, and a pneumatic cushion
Handcrafted in England since 1885
8½" long.

I use coconut oil a lot now. On my hair and skin with good results. I haven't tried any of the other things you suggested. I really just want a good brush and this one seems to be it. If anyone knows of a brush that has the same qualities but are cheaper, please let me know.

So far nobody has convinced me that I don't want this brush.

tinypliny - 12/06/10 21:39
Hmmm... have you ever tried massaging your scalp with coconut oil and then conditioning with either:

-- Henna mixed into a paste with water (will colour you hair reddish brown...) or
-- Moong-dal powder mixed into a paste with water or
-- Fenugreek seed powder paste with water
-- Indian gooseberry (amla) paste (I don't think you can get this here, though...)

All three are excellent for scalp stimulation and promoting an exceptionally silky dense hair growth.

100% boar hair bristles are found in many cheaper brushes in the market. I think they can easily be a replacement for this costly one. I think its the vintage nature of the brush and probably the brand name that is pushing up the markup on the one you posted.
libertad - 11/28/10 13:32
I know someone who has this brush and she loves it. I really like this scalp massager I have and would imagine this brush would feel so great. Obviously, I don't have much hair so I am looking for the scalp stimulation. These are new brushes not antiques...that would be kind of gross unless you just wanted to display it. I found them on Amazon for $90. There are a lot of things I need to do with my money before I can justify making this purchase!
paul - 11/28/10 11:49
Can it really work? Is it so expensive because its an antique or are they still produced? I am pretty sure they did not have nylon in 1885.
