Just when I thought I had eaten everything
Category: food
My chinese coworker says he is bringing in chinese squash soup. At first I figured it was just a name for the type of soup but with squash I would recognize so I asked him for some pictures from this site

They are both squashed I have never seen. I makes me wonder what else is out there. He said he didn't know english names for them.

So I can find this later and sigh :::link:::
tinypliny - 09/03/10 19:25
The first one is Ridge gourd (Tori in hindi) and the second one is bottle gourd or the calabash (Ghiya in hindi).

There are so many other types of gourds/squashes that I miss so much :::link:::

I love this squash. I make soup out of it too. I wonder if they put lentils in the soup in china. I miss squash from home. It would be so handy to have a chinese and indian store in downtown. I hate having to transfer twice just to get to a decent store, so I just stopped going and changed what I cook.

New Mac Window Manipulation Icon Placement
Category: mac
I really hope Apple doesn't go with this new vertical icon placement for the whole OS. It is so ugly and frustrating. It seems especially stupid when it doesn't match the rest of the OS.

Below you can see the difference between safari and itunes.

Mac OS Snow Leopard in Vmware on Fedora On a Dell
Category: computers
Well this answers the question I wasn't sure about. Was my vmware image of snow leopard only working because I was previously running fedora on a macbook pro? The answer appears to be no and holy crap it is fast now. Here we have Snow Leopard in Fedora on Dell. Don't worry I bought an actual copy of snow leopard for this.

The fact that both that and the windows VMs both boot up in about 1-5 seconds makes testing web stuff in every OS a snap. This is especially important now that the resolution on my screen is 150dpi.

Oh... and to see Adobe suite launch in seconds instead of minutes is a wonder. I hardly think before quitting programs anymore, they're so easy to relaunch painlessly.

Awesome.

I'd never go back to a hard drive after getting used to SSD's. Super fast reboots and VM's make everything nicer. I've also noticed IDE's / editors to be a lot more usable in projects with tons of little files, the random access speeds are insane.

Congrats on the new laptop ;)

The new dell m4500
Category: computers
Its ugly and heavy but its a powerhouse and its not a mac.

When first booted it up to install fedora, I accidentally forgot to hit f12 to boot from the DVD and it started to load the factory preinstalled windows 7. Believe it or not windows 7 crashed on first boot and went into that stupid safe mode screen.

I quickly restarted and booted up the fedora dvd. Luckily Linux is running smooth on the quad core 2.0 ghz i7 with 8gb of ram, 256gb ssd and a 1gb nvidia card.

I love fedora so much. Every freaking thing worked on first try both on this and my old MacBook pro.

Just for fun I tried to install ubuntu on a secondary drive on the same machine. The experience was horrible. The internal monitor did not work, there was no default option for full disk encryption during install, and even after the install, the internal monitor did not working without a lot of fiddling around.

I simply booted up the live Fedora 14 disk and installed right over it.

Unlearning is the toughest part. I still struggle between metric and non-metric units and constantly convert in my head. Though I am guessing that unlearning OS-based preferences and habits would be much easier than rewiring my brain for a measurement system that just doesn't make sense.
uncutsaniflush - 09/03/10 21:59
Wow. Those are impressive specs. I suspect that a 256 gig ssd costs more than some of my neighbor's houses on the WestSide.

(e:tinypliny) - you (and most people) are victim to the myth that Microsoft Windows products are easy to use and user-friendly. In India and other countries outside the grasp of Microsoft's tentacles, new users have little trouble using Linux computers because they don't have to unlearn what they know about Windows.

I've been using various flavours of Linux since 2001 almost exclusively. Windows XP and Windows 7 boxes confuse me because the gui isn't like any of the Linux guis and desktop environments I'm used to.

It's like imperial vs. metric measurementwise. Metric is easier if you don't need to remember what a gallon is in litres. Imperial Gallons are easier if you don't need to convert them into litres.

Little wonder then, that so many of us with gutless souls are still on Win XP.

Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing to attempt.
