Beach Ratings
To be honest I'm not buying this guys rational, then again I guess I like to actually SWIM from the Beach that I would be on and not freeze. Oh, and being allowed to kick back with a Corona (in a can) would be nice as well. Plus not having a $40 cover charge is also a bonus...

Siesta Beach is #1 in my book if you just enjoy any of the above.

Then again I don't know how much longer it will be in the current state that it is in given the mess BP is brewing :-/

Brilliant WNY Summer Concert Series Idea
Category: concerts
To be honest when the schedules for the "free" shows around the area are released, I'm always praying "Please don't let it be someone I MUST see!" To be honest I can't stand most of the people in the area that go to these shows be it at Artpark, Lockport or the Square. I hate the crowds, the ignorant fucks that bump into you, the people that smoke in your face, especially the ones that have no courtesy or concept of personal space, the ones that plant lawn chairs in the middle of a main pathway. I probably missed a few more, OH Wait Tiffany LOL! (or some other suburban female name) giving you a dirty look as your are cheering a great song that you only partially heard as she was SQUEAKING in that Paris/Lindsay voice, yea you know the ones.

Well the Hard Rock in Niagara Falls unveiled their own line-up the best part, You can pay $50 to get away from the masses that are there just because it's free and enjoy the music in their VIP section. There have been so many times over the years where I wish I could have PAID money to enjoy a show at the square to be with people that wanted to experience and hear the show instead of trying to look Hawt at the world's largest outdoor happy hour.

I tell you now if you're a Tragically Hip fan, that $50 will be a small price to pay in comparison the the aggravation you will have to deal with if you want to enjoy the experience. Remember they played a week solid of sold out shows at Artpark last summer, It's going to be F'ing insane! That's not unless you enjoy getting bumped into unsupervised kids in the Fallz as their white trash parents sit on lawn chairs drinking BUSCH totally unaware of what is going on around them. I know I've been to a few outdoor concerts 2 blocks up Falls St at the Casino.

--Music Is Art is a great Charity and glad to hear that money goes to them

--For me the Falls is a long way to go for a show (kinda a tough trek, haven't done it at night in a long time)

--I don't know the Local scene enough or the music enough to know who those bands are. What I mean is I know the Names of the bands but couldn't match it to their music.

--I do think it is a great idea

--I do get that entire there for the scene not for the music, I get why it is annoying but it is also kinda part of the fun as well, well some of it.

-- In terms of being bumped into Ladies I don't mind.

--The thing is anyplace where it is packed you will get bumped into that is something that can't be helped (No Reason to fight just like in a bar you are tipsy just if I hit your drink I should be willing to maybe get you one or not be a dick about it)

There are other places to go see shows where they cost money though. I used to love the showplace wish that was still open. I haven't been to Diablo or Town Ballroom in so long and it is sad. What I wish is that all the Big Bands went someplace other then Darien Lake:
1. I get it is the summer so you want the outside thing
2. During the summer they do the Amusement Park thing
3. I don't drive so forget getting there or getting home
4. I went to one show (Metallica, Jerry Cantrel and days of the new) It was a great time but I think getting out of the lot took about an hour, no thank you. Not getting home just getting out of the lot. I'm not cutting my concert short fuck that......

I miss the old days of the LaSalle Park shows. Granted they didn't have tons of them but They where Fun, Warped Tour and Edgefest where all ways fun. Then for free I saw Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, at the time they where Huge (spanish band on the west, oh man) and I forget who else. But with the Condo's so close that kinda killed that.

(e:vincent) sorry to kinda take over your post:

Does anyone remember when Artfest would have Their street festivals and they would all ways have a Major National Act there, man those where the good times.

Oil Spill & Railfaning
Category: transport
As I look at the oil spill and get more and more pissed off by the day I just remind myself that people in charge do things that is right for their rich friends and not for the common good. Might makes right and there is nothing that ever seems to get done for the higher purpose, like saving the environment. It makes me wonder how much environmental damage might have been prevented if we never tore up the the streetcars that we had even 60 years ago? This if just F'd up because one could still have lived in East Aurora, Lancaster, Olcott Beach or Youngstown and commuted to work in Buffalo every day.

Then the best part is the spend millions of shitload dollars to put in a joke of a light rail train that went over the same right of way 35 years ago!

Remember the CSX ad stating that they can move 1 ton 423 miles using 1 gallon of diesel? Just imagine these streetcars using electricity from the Hydro Electric station in Lewiston which would be pretty much all green?
vincent - 05/26/10 21:27
Agreed x2

This catastrophe is making me despondent, I'm glad that I was able to enjoy the Gulf 4x this winter and share it with all of you. :-(
libertad - 05/26/10 21:18
Agreed.
heidi - 05/26/10 20:48
(e:libertad) - I think and hope you're right that our way of life will be changed. It has to change - we have to move away from a fossil-fuel-based economy, and away from a consumerist economy. Constant, limitless growth is unrealistic - there are physical and environmental limits to our ability to expand. I'm afraid that income inequality is going to just increase - both between and within countries - as they jockey for control over dwindling fossil fuel supplies. Oh, and water, too. <sigh>
libertad - 05/26/10 18:55
After watching the live feed of the oil well disaster I have realized the latest top kill is never, ever going to work and I think it is now much worse. The oil is coming out with so much more force and pressure than it was before. This is not going to stop for another two months until they finish the relief well. Our way of life will be changed.
libertad - 05/26/10 18:11
I can barely even describe how sad this oil spill has made me. Maybe someday I will try and write about it myself. It is just so overwhelming. This has the potential to be the worst environmental disaster to date on this planet. I hope this next stunt by BP will stop it but I am fearful it might even make it worse.
metalpeter - 05/25/10 18:16
I have seen old pictures where you have cars and street cars on the same street and yes Buffalo was one of the places I don't get why you would get rid of them it makes no sense.

In Terms of BP or anyone who Drills this is even more true when working out in the ocean. Every piece of equipement should have multiple plans filed about what to do if it breaks or missfunctions and even right down to multiple ways of fixing the problem for both continuing to work and to stop oil flow all together. This way anything that goes wrong the files are in a secure off site location as well as on site. Something goes wrong you just look it up and fix the problem. There is no reason For BP trying to do all this stuff and none of it works. There should have been (Maybe there is but that is my next point) a plan where you can stop the leak or stop the oil from comming where it is comming from. Have you noticed everything they are doing is containment and not stopping it.

I don't agree with everything Bill Maher Says. But he wonders if BP doesn't want to do what would stop the oil from leaking out. At First that sounds crazy and makes no sense. But if you think about it does make sense. BP doesn't care how much oil they lose, they want to just do what is cheapest. See when they lose oil, then everyone who wants their oil since their is less of it pays more for it. Oh and guess what that does, yes tarnish the name, but it makes their profits higher. ARGh.........

Wanna hear something that'll fan the flames?

When the NFTA's subway was being designed/built in the 70's, they had the option to build using the same trains used in NYC subways.

However, palms got greased and the cars/track were purchased new from Japan. Unfortunately, Japanese trains run on a slightly narrower gauge of track and thus are completely incompatible with standard US light rail.

The result is a rail line with non-standard track and rare foreign train cars that are expensive to maintain and replace. So, we can't expand the current one-line subway without severe expense.

Had we just built to the standard used in other cities, we could buy refurbished/recycled cars from NYC and expand with relatively low cost. So, it's really a double-fucking: The environment in fuel (and trains that end up in the scrapheap) and, of course, our pocketbooks.

Apple Rant
Loveline is back on locally as cfny 102.1 carries it Sun-Thurs 10-12 Midnight. This also made me reminisce about Adam Carolla the co-host back in the day. So I ended up finding one of these rants by him that made me go Humm and remember why I loved him on the show.

tiburon1724 - 05/29/10 18:37
Carolla does a Podcast that's really good. Check it out. (The Adam Carolla Show)
metalpeter - 05/20/10 17:24
1. Not sure if I can get that on my radio
2. Watched the video it is a great point
The thing with getting things fixed is that no one can tell you how much it will really be untill they send it out and fix it

Here is what I think, if you make something that can't handle normal wear and tear you should have to cover the cost of fixing it, I like his idea about apple does this on purpose

3. Corrolla was also great on "The Man Show" and he is the Voice of Spanky The Pig On drawn together. That is a great show that I haven't seen in a long time.

I guess I'm not poor after all
Category: money
After beating myself up for having a net worth under 100K I guess I can feel a bit better about myself.

This site Global Rich List Does put things in perspective. So even if you collected unemployment last year and made 18,000, you're still in the top 12% of the world in terms of wealth! Crazy
james - 05/13/10 09:22
"$73 could buy you a new mobile phone OR a new mobile health clinic to care for AIDS orphans in Uganda."

You show me a health clinic designed by Apple and I am sold.
tinypliny - 05/13/10 08:54
Interesting...

"$8 could buy you 15 organic apples OR 25 fruit trees for farmers in Honduras to grow and sell fruit at their local market."

Yeah, sure will. If it makes it past the politicians in these poor countries - who, I bet are also on the rich list. I am very skeptical about these "giving projects" that promise to do good for the poor.

I have been on the delivery end of some health programs in my country and seen first-hand how much corruption and embezzlement goes on. If you really want to give, then ideally, there should be no middlemen controlling who gets the biggest cut of YOUR money. Ideally, if you want to give, you need to go out there yourself and give to whomever you want to. Since this is an impractical proposition, the rich will remain rich in these "poor scenarios".
