Comfort food for bleak days.Category: eating in
Broccoli and bell peppers steamed with fresh coriander, fresh red chillies, jalapenos, garlic, mint, coconut, ginger, galangal, red-chilli powder and yellow split peas in soy sauce.
They never become indistinguishable! They are completely different.
Red chilli powder comes from dried red chillies. If it is from India (mine always are), the red chilies are specifically sourced from either South or the Northwest parts of the country. This, in itself, makes a difference in how the chili powder tastes. I prefer the ones from the South - they are somehow more intense and flavourful (or maybe I am biased).
The fresh red chillies were from a vietnamese store in Buffalo. In this case, they were finely chopped and used to season the yellow-split peas in groundnut oil. So their role was basically to season the peas and not the broccoli/pepper combo. The red chillie powder was blended with the coconut, galangal, garlic and coriander and tossed with the broccoli. So the dish actually tastes very different if you don't include red chillie powder.
I didn't include the recipe because I am not very sure in what order and quantities I made this. I was listening to some interesting radio and things become very fuzzy once I am done eating... I need to take notes while I am cooking otherwise I never remember what went in.
At what point do the red chillies and the red chilli powder become indistinguishable?
sounds great, minus all the hot chili peppers that would send me to the hospital :)
LOL (e:paul) - your idea of broccoli might enter at #1 under #bland in my kitchen. ;-)
yes, that sounds delicious.
I think (e:Terry) would like that. I am constantly amazed at the amount of spice in Indian food. Can you even taste the intrinsic vegetable flavor with that much spice? Instead of brocolli with some spice, it sounds like spice topped with brocolli, lol. My perfect brocolli just has some salt, oil and maybe some lemon but I even like it plain.
ugh I have done nothing but eat all day long- and now I want that! Thanks a lot Tiny!! ;)

Goodbye, summer in Buffalo. Hope the coming winter is just as incredible. :)
Hey, stick it to the man (who says summer ends today)!
WNY tourism is the best. I am surprised there aren't more crazed japanese around the place. :)
shhhhhh! we still have three weeks of summer left. yeesh! ;)
and then there will be new views to appreciate through fall and winter!
It was nice looking through your pictures. I am partial to the light house with the sun ray breaking through the clouds.
I need to be a WNY tourist for a day- see things in a different way rather than take it for granted or ignore all together.
Wow you took a bunch of great pictures. I'm glad you got a chance to go up on the observation deck also, it is pretty cool up there.
beautiful photos, except for that japanese beetle, who is so harmful.
will this be your first winter in buffalo? i hope you can find the beauty then, too!
Gorgeous!
Brilliant! I loved this. :-)

Roswell Recycling is finally official.Category: carbon neutral
Keeping it green
Many departments are already recycling their clean, non-confidential waste paper -- here's how you can join them in reducing the amount of paper that goes into our waste stream.
Call Mary Kenefick, Director of Environmental Services at x8036 to request a blue tote. Please request only one blue tote per department or floor as there is a limited supply and they are expensive to purchase.
I have a recycling-motivated department and we already had a blue recycling tote in place. However, I have been a bit apprehensive about where all the contents of the tote were going. I am glad that there is official recognition for recycling efforts now.
Place the tote in a central, easily accessible area for all employees in your work area. Most departments find that a tote located near their mail boxes or photocopying area works best. Clean paper including magazines, newspapers, and cardboard "backers" from note pads and similar packaging can be put in the blue tote. The Environmental Services staff will collect this paper for packing for recycling. Cardboard boxes and large cardboard packing materials can be flattened and left in the same area as the blue tote and will also be recycled.
NICE! They will now recycle cardboard instead of tossing them in the big garbage bin when all the employees have gone home. Hallelujah!
I am elated that the task force is finally nudging Roswell on its way to becoming green! Now, if only they will reconsider the energy wasting policy of keeping *all* the computers on power all the time, instead of specific days on which they push updates...
We need an energy conservation task force as well.
