The floor Saga
Category: linwood
I am helpig (e:matthew) fullfill his dream of slowly restoring everything to its original state. I draw the line at the kitchen. Luckily, our house was pretty modern for its time. For example, it had bathrooms.

It all started with this small hint that it was really tile underneith. I started to excavate a bit and then thought I should look online to see if it is asbestos, considering how much vinyl tile is. Then I discovered it was asbestos. I clearly found the exact print in the 1965 Armstrong Excelon vinyl asbestos floor tile catalog

image

Here it is

image

First we had to get the toilet up.
image

I shaved so my mask would fit snugly. Here I am half done.
image

Then I dressed up in my space suit and covered everything in myspace format.
image

image

Then I taped myself in the room so no air could get out.

I learned everything I could about asbestos tile removal and decided to try it myself. It is not that dangerous as it is not very dusty at all. THe vinyl holds the asbestos in and it comes up in chunks. The secret was to use a waster mister and lots of wet newspaper on top while prying it up.

Turned out it made no dust as everything was soaking wet. The problem was the tar under the tiles was so sticky that it made the tiles so hard to remove.

Here I am after I got only a couple tiles up.

image

I think it is going to take a few weeks to finish. I am going to try tomorrow with dry ice. I here it makes the glue freeze up and let go of the tile.

To make life more fun, there is a drip in the basement going to one of the water spouts outside and it has no shutoff so we before the drip. So basically we have to turn off all the water to fix it, argh.

image

After I discovered it we ended up using the box to hold it until we can fix it tomorrow.

First of all where did that OXY come from, Ha. I noticed that mainly because the company I work for now owns it, and makes it not sure how all of that works really. IN terms of the tile question I have a good guess as to why it was covered.
1) It can be very slippery and who ever had the house maybe that was a concern.

2) There was a problem with the tile like cracked or broken or even that it was worth money but the people who had the house didn't have the money or resources to deal with it so they did the thing on the cheap.

Just two guesses really

I had the mask on. It was a new one that is way awesome. I think it is the difference between made in china and made in brazil. I will get a good pic with it and post it.
jenks - 05/22/09 03:08
twisted said what I was going to. Why on earth cover that tile with stupid linoleum?
twisted - 05/21/09 23:28
  1. 1 Where was your gas mask :::link::: during all of this?
  2. 2 Who in their right mind would cover that classically beautiful hex-shaped ceramic tile with fake pebbles asbestos-based tile? Oh yeah, it was probably the 70s.
heidi - 05/21/09 23:24
While you're fixing it, add a shut-off valve?

The space suit is very sexy.
theecarey - 05/21/09 22:51
that asbestos flooring looks familiar- is that what covers the other bathroom floor?

or maybe these pics sparked some ancient asbestos memory.

A 45 RPM record is the perfect size to use as a pattern for cutting tile for around a toilet.

have fun!
metalpeter - 05/21/09 18:37
that looks gross, I assume from the tittle you need a new Toliet?

Earth/lung friendly paint
Category: linwood
Home depot has this new low VOC lung and earth friendly paint line. I
would probably use this for everything from now on but $35/gallon is
kind of steep considering I don't know if it works well or not. They
should have a cheaper introductory price so you could test it. The
color selection is great.

I don't know who makes it but I saw an interesting ad for some kind of paint that they claim helps your house smell better. I think that they claim that it obsorbs the smells but I'm not sure it sounded like it would be pretty costly, I also wondered if it was safe does anyone know. I rent so it really isn't an issue for me.

metalpeter - 05/23/09 09:46
Would I be correct to assume that if I grabbed some burgers on my way over someone could cook them up? I suck at grilling my self
fellyconnelly - 05/21/09 20:22

Sushi at wasabi

(E:enknot) and I went to wasabi on elmwood for lunch the other day. We
both got the sushi/sashimi lunch for $12. It comes with lots of fish
and 6 crunchy crab peices. I also ordered some octopus and the sales
girl upsild us on some toro (fatty tuna) which brought my total closer
to $20 which is redox for lunch but it's also rare we eat sushi of
that caliber.
image
jbeatty - 05/20/09 21:55
Yeah, they are all about pushing toro there. I got roped into the live scallop, which I'm certain wasn't really live. I like wasabi for lunch, service is a bit on the akward side thought.
jenks - 05/20/09 17:35
Have you been to Seabar? I finally went... and it was definitely good- but i'm not sure it was AS good as everyone made it out to be. (I'd been told that once I eat there I will NEVER want to eat sushi ANYWHERE else again.) It was also super expensive. Like $10-12 for a roll. I like wasabi.
jason - 05/20/09 13:26
Last time I ate at Wasabi the waitress pushed the Toro as well. I went with the Uni instead because I always wanted to try it. Have you ever had the Uni? Interesting texture to say the least.

Anyway, I really like fatty tuna belly. Eating seafood is in my blood but I really don't get enough of it.
hodown - 05/20/09 12:55
That is SO much sushi for $20. If I ordered that here it would easily be $40 plus..

Color me jealous.
