RadioShack!!
Yes, RadioShack! How do they stay in business? seriously. I don't get it....of all the chains to shutter the last 2 years...Circuit City, Linens & Things, KB Toys, RadioShack still remains profitable? What reason is there to enter one of these stores? Anyone have any insight?
tiburon1724 - 03/25/09 20:39
Maybe in some city stores it's because there are no other options, but RadioShack is typically in suburban malls and shopping centers, so a bulk of it's business may be in walk-in wanderers who get sucked in by high pressure salesmen? I don't know...maybe they're getting insane kickbacks from the aforementioned companies which is keeping them afloat.
metalpeter - 03/25/09 20:03
I still go back to the knowledge base. If you go to best buy it is some young kid who doesn't know what he is talking about. I think Best Buy is pretty cool myself and if I wanted a TV that is where I might go. "Hold on I have a call on my police scanner, they are talking about this same subject and it turns out lots of Private Eyes and spies and law enforcement go there and that is what keeps them open", Ha kidding of course. That being said A lot of people go there for movies and CDs. I think radio shack is good if you you just want like something you need. I also wonder if it is a city thing. What I mean is in Buffalo not sure about other places but Radio Shack used to be all over the city and to go to Places like circuit city you have to go out to the burbs. It would be interesting to have a real answer instead of just guesses.

yes back in the day they had Tandy, Remote Control Cars, and were the only destination for most of what you've mentioned, but that's not the case anymore....they've done nothing to differentiate themselves in the market. They sell cell phones...well so does everyone else. They sell Sirius/XM...well so does everyone else. They sell DirecTV systems...well so does everyone else. They sell silly robotic toys...well so does everyone else. It's not like they're inexpensive, and their 59 cent XYZ to QWP adaptors etc don't bring in enough revenue to sustain a business...but their stock seems somewhat stable and while they did close a bunch of locations a little while back, there's no panic surrounding them for some reason. As someone in retail, it baffles me. There's a job posted for RadioShack District Mgr here, I might apply in hopes to interview just so I can ask! lol

Not sure if this is true any more, but Radio Shack is where you get the techy stuff. If you have a TV that you want to hook up that is where you go to get all the wires and they will tell you how to do it. All those places with geek squad and firedog or what ever they are called are all copying what Radio Shack was. If you want to listen in on the cops go to radio shack. You want to make a Ham Radio or short wave radio go to radio shack. The only place that used to sell remote control cars was radio shack. They have all ways had the image of being the place where the people who know about Geek stuff work and do it for fun. Plus they used to sell IBM computers but call them Tandy or what ever they where. In fact I might be going there on my day off so I can get a Memory card reader. On a side note they don't put a lot of money into ads. They also don't have huge stores. If you go in and ask for some thing they can tell you if they have it. They have small stores that they don't have to pay to heat that are the size of target. I'm guessing that the stuff they sell they have a better profit margin on it.

Circuit City was very badly mismanaged. I don't know about the rest. Circuit City had nearly the same amount of employees Radio Shack currently has.
libertad - 03/25/09 13:45
i don't get it either.

and the hotel
Category: buffalo
Here is the hotel that will be part of Avant. Taking reservations beginning July 1!
tiburon1724 - 03/25/09 00:20
that's true, there is always a hotel...wonder if there's some sort of tax break/incentive attached or something
tinypliny - 03/24/09 15:27
We need hotels, people.
janelle - 03/24/09 09:43
lol @ (e:James). It's so true!
james - 03/24/09 08:57
It isn't a project in Buffalo unless there is a hotel attached.

Roaming Buffaloes
Category: personal life
Came across Roaming Buffaloes, a social networking club/group/whatever you want to call it. Looks like fun, there's an annual membership fee of $45 if it's paid before Thursday and some events have an additional fee while some are free...pick and choose what you want to do. I'm going to give it a try, expand my horizons ya know?
vincent - 03/22/09 23:11
At least you're trying. The biggest mistake you cane ever make is just to throw in the towel.

But Yea, I hear you the biological clock just isn't for women.

Speed Date
Category: love life
So I missed the party again I know, wish I could've made it. Looked like a good time again.

I've hit the realization that I'm older than I feel I am....and time is ticking. I feel I need to find the right woman and fast! I've tried things I never thought I would before....Craigslist, if you get through all the fake listings and don't end up getting mugged instead of a date, can be an ok method...met a girl I've been hanging out with lately but just am not really really into......I also went on a Speed Date held at Chocolate Bar which was actually a lot of fun. Couple really cute girls there, matched up with one of them and had the best date ever with her, but then she blew me off without explanation. arghh Oh well there's another one next month :)
metalpeter - 03/23/09 19:37
As an upside I have heard they have great food and drinks. I think speed dating is a great idea, don't think it would work for me though personally. I wish you luck.
jenks - 03/22/09 22:58
is there speed dating in buffalo? (i guess so, duh...) I did it once in med school and it was fun. Would totally try it again.

So has anyone seen Avant yet? It's behind the Hampton Inn on Delaware/Chippewa. Freakin' awesome for Buffalo! Check it out

tiburon1724 - 03/23/09 22:46
I would if I had the money. With $1 million you could maybe buy 10 houses in a "nice" WNY neighborhood....houses that are at least 50 years old. you can't live in all those, so why not live in 1 baller-status pad?
james - 03/23/09 13:11
I still wonder who would pay $1.73 Million for that. You could buy a city block in a nice neighborhood for that kind of cash.
tiburon1724 - 03/23/09 12:30
they're condos, for sale, if I remember correctly they begin around $315,000 for the smallest units and the huge ones go for around $1.2 million.
tinypliny - 03/23/09 00:39
Wow - those are fancy! I wonder what the price of those apartments are...
zobar - 03/22/09 10:07
I was wondering about that thing … I've been working next door at New Era for the past few months. Very impressive.
