Graduation Error
Category: school
Katie dropped off a box of letters that came to the 444. In them was a letter from UB dated Sept 21st that said they regret to inform me that I was removed from the list of graduation candidiates. So after freaking out for 5 minutes, I called them up and they said it was a mistake and that I really am graduating. I am so glad it is really over. For a minute I thought I was going to have to go back to UB. Frankly, I never want to see UB again. (e:shawnr) IMed me about something similar the other day. I wonder if his was a mistake too.

shawnr - 10/07/06 20:49
that's exactly what happened to me -- they told me that pretty much everyone who graduated on 9/1 got that letter... haha
carolinian - 09/28/06 21:58
I had a slightly different experience on the other end of school life. For two years I had been going to NC State as a part time student, and two separate times, once for winter and once for fall, I had applied to be a full time student. The first time admissions had gotten my Social Security number wrong, so all the record of all the good grades I had received at the school were not applied to my application (my grades at a previous school sucked). I found out about their mistake and asked them to fix it for the second time I had applied. The second time, again they lost the social. Eventually they let me in on a technically of making the same administrative screw-up twice. But dammit, I was pissed when that happened.

Canisius Has me listed as the wrong year of graduation. I finished in 96 but had classes that had to transfer. I walked the stage but to graduate I would have had to asked the teachers and then if my grades where good enough to gaurantee that they would at least be a C then they would state that and then the credits would transfer before I had a final grade then I would graduate. There is no way I would be that arrogant to ask a teacher that. Oh well I could care less with comuteing I only met a few people who I liked in school anyways. The people I knew from swim team where preaty cool but I had none of them in any of my classes so never really stayed in touch with any of them. That is one disadvantage of comutiing.
kookcity2000 - 09/28/06 13:48
dude I got the same letter from UB when I finished my undergrad.
One of my professors hadn't turned in my grade in time.
It defaulted to an 'I' grade and they said I couldn't graduate. Even thorugh I could have graduated (GPA-wise and requirement-wise) with an 'F'.

Lighting Fixture and Curtains
Category: housing
I got a new light fixture for my office at Royalite on Maple. It looks so much better now. The old one was so messed up. I switched to a new camera app for my phone, it takes such better quality pictures which proves its all in the software.

This was the old light fixture.

The new one.

We went to linens and things. We didn't use the coupon my mother gave me because it expired on Sept 6th. My mother apparently told me they accepted expired coupons but I forgot that part.

image

Curtains are ridiculously expensive. It is ridculous that they come in panels and not in pairs. (e:matthew) really wants this mirror but we had to draw the line somewhere
image

Wow the camera gets good details.

I miss my cam. I would have been able to make my journal that much better with it.
iriesara - 09/27/06 10:48
Curtains can be expensive to buy - but pretty easy to make. I made a real nice pair of curtains for my huge closet that is supposed to have a set of those doors on rollers that never work, and I got some nice fabric and made pretty simple curtains. They came out pretty well. I already had the sewing machine, but the fabric and thread cost probably $40-$50, so I'm not sure if that would be a deal or not, considering what prices you are looking at. Plus - don't you have an "in" at JoAnn Fabrics?

The RObber and the Chair
Category: housing
Apparently, if you get a letter saying you are COMMAND TO APPEAR IN COURT, it is not that important. The prosecutor said no one ever shows up for something like this. I assumed commanded meant that we had to show up but the police man said we were not material witnesses, eaning there would be punishment for not showing up. I guess I do not watch enough crime drama.

I a glad I went because I just wanted to know who the dude was. The dude who robbed the credit card from my house was in fact the dude that asked me and (e:mike) for money when we were leaving the house. The story was that he need $4 to get to Medina. Not as bad as the woman who stopped by to ask for $35 twice on Sunday. They had to drop the felony charges because the police office searched him without a warrant when he found our credit cards.

The police officer said that he is from a whole crime family but in a crackhead not clamorous mafia way like my own. I am wondering if his brother is the guy who asked us if we were keeping the plants in our living roo today. Maybe, he was forshadowing to when he removes them!

I bought a new chair. It was great from the scratch and dent section at FWS. I also bought the rug for the Lisa Wist Room. I hope that white shag is appropriate for the room. (e:matthew) said it is tacky italian.

And (e:matthew) painting.

We bought the paint at Value and it was mixed wrong so that of the five cans of the same color, none of them were excatly the same. They said we should have known to mix them ourselves, but frankly, I never had this problem at home depot where they use a computer to mix instead of a human. Is it worht the additional $7 - maybe it is because now we have to repaint a huge section of the house tonight. Luckily, they are giving us new paint free and mixed into a five gallon container.

That was dumb, I clicked save comments without commenting - ugh!
Anyway, Paul, it would not be a proper Visco abode without shag carpeting! at least a little...
You'll have to get a little rake for it!

The Green Room
Category: housing
(e:terry) and I cleaned out and painted the former blue room and made it into the green room in honor of (e:twisted)'s arrival. I tried to style it in a way that I thought she would like. I am going to go get carpet tonight, finish painting and scarping the paint off the windows, and repairing a rather large hole in the way that the former owner's son cut in the wall to fit his monitor on his desk. Who does shit like that? I seriously spent about 30 hours scraping the texture paint, painting, and spackling this room over the weekend. You have no idea how much we have painted. (e:mike) helped scrape the crunchy texture paint off the main hall walls.

While searching for what caused some water damage in the past of the 3rd floor hallway we found that there is a trap door out onto the roof. We wanted to go out here yesterday but couldn't because of the high wind. It seems as though my vision of a third floor roof porch ay happen after all. There is a ~ 20 foot square flat area right on top of the roof. I had to get up there anyways in order to remove a baby tree that decided to try and grow in our fireplace.

image

It seems as though the trap door was leaking at some point in the house's history and the water cause massive damage before anyone noticed. It seems like such a simple problem to let get out of control, but I guess for anyone not spry enough to climb around in the rafters it might seem like a bigger problem. I cannot wait to finish the non-finished part of the attic. It seems capable of supporting an additional floor/loft as a fourth floor? The ceilings are about 30 feet high in the middle.

image

Here is where the damage was the worst, there were even some dried up mushroom like in the crack mansion down the street. Thank god it is all dried up and fixed. I wonder when the damage occurred and how long it took some one to notice. The problem caused damage two floor down. The damage all seems fixable.
twisted - 09/25/06 22:55
OMG, it's gorgeous! If you leave it half-finished, I'll feel right at home. But if you finish it, I might move in permanently, haha. Anyway, can't wait to see it - and all of you - in person!

Why the name change elmwood strip?
Category: elmwood
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the place referred to as the Elmwood Village, I just the new name. I think it expresses an aire of pretension by trying to exclude itself form the rest of the city possibly to align it with a more suburban flavor.

This doesn't mean that I am not going to capitalize on it like everyone else. Maybe I shouldn't even care now that I live in Linwood Shire.

I think the sign that says, "Welcome to the Elmwood Village" on the front of We Never Close is what did it for me.

image

Frankly, it is a strip - it is a straight street that goes from one end of the city to city center and business does not travel much in any perpendicular direction.

Is the point of the name change just to make real villagers more comfortable with shopping there? Or is to make the people that live there feel like they live in a village. Is Hertel/North Buffalo going to become the Hertel Village in it's footsteps?

It seems like it takes credit away from the City of Buffalo be declaring Elmwood to be a Village. "This part is revitalizing, but we are not really part of the city."

On a totally separate note but still in the Elmwood Village - Atak (e:trish,83) has officially gotten lazy?

image

Why has nothing become of the old platos at ELmwood and Forest Avenue? The new Platos in the Village of Kenmore always looks busy. Myabe it is because that part of elmwood is really in a village, lol.

image

The house where (e:iriesara) lived and the murder occurred. It was a spooky place, I will let her tell you about it.
image

The Indian Buffet is yummy as ever. I love that place and the tasty red chicken legs.
image

The old estrip house on Lafayette still looks like shit. I wonder if Jim Leong will ever paint the outside. I love how on the front there is that big area of white that has been there for about 3 years. Across the street from him it looks like the boarding house has turned into some commercial spot with luxury apartments? The dude that used to live in the back part of that house was insane. Does anyone else remember him. I wonder where he will go when it is luxury apartments?
image

Totally non-related - naked babies at Amvets.
image

metalpeter - 09/25/06 19:41
Don't worry the red Chicken is well cooked it is called Tonduri Chicken, I know it is an indian spice and there are differant kinds of it so not all tonduri spiced things are that color.

The village vs. the strip I think is that the Buisness people want people to think they are going to a Neighboor hood in stead of a bunch of shops down a street. I think Village will also be used so that houses near elmwood won't be called west side anymore. It is a way to kinda move away from the west side and grant. I think they want people to think that there are Businesses and homes all togather. But if you look at the side streets that isn't true Bada Bings and Platos both moved. What I wonder more about is Why nothing has moved in the Elmwood Soda Bar/Sofra that is a prime spot you can have up stairs and downstairs. I would think that Plato would be a great place for a business to move that dosn't want to worry about that slum lord selling his houses for a project of some kind.
vincent - 09/24/06 17:55
I think that the "Village" is a Real Estate marketing concept to encompass the residential houses on either side of Elmwood. As you were saying Strip just brings to mind commercial business. If you were buying a hosue on say Auburn you now feel like you own a peice of the Village instead of being in close proximity to a commercial district.

It's all about perception.
jenks - 09/24/06 17:22
ooh paul I love indian, and live right by that place, and never have anyone to go with --> so next time you want indian give me a call!
imk2 - 09/24/06 16:41
it wasnt the murder of casey, was it?
