Gunman on the loose at ECMCCategory: health
Waiting for matt to get out today and he texts me saying he is locked in his room and there is a gunman on the loose who already killed two people. This is so scary.

The Allentown Art FestivalCategory: art
What is up with the increased drama between the two festivals? These signs located at elmwood and allen, way after the allen town art festival but just before you reach the allentown west festival are so douchey and just make me hate the Allentown Art Festival.
To be fair I was only there on a hunt for fried artichokes hearts, which I never found. We literally ran the entirety of both festivals on the quest for them. I hope I didn't miss it

Not sure.... I didn't see those yesterday but saw one today on the other side it said welcome.... I think Allentown has never liked that festival... If you think about it they are so different bars and if you own a place you are allowed to sell in front of it where as with the art festival you have no right to that space......

Liberty Hound At Buffalo Inner HarborCategory: food
I headed out to the inner harbor for lunch with my mother after (e:Matthew)'s graduation. The food was totally amazing. Its a great seafood restaurant owned by the same people that run Blue Monk on elmwood.
The food is primarily seafood but they have some other fare including burgers and steak. Today they also had some pulled pork on special.
Being the seafood lovers that we are, we went for the ciopino. It was amazing. Mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp and cod.
The inside of the place looks nice and sits right inside the museum by the canal but we sat outside on the patio to enjoy the weather.
I wish I would have taken a picture of the parmesaen truffle fries we got for an appetizer but I was to busy eating it!
They open for service at 11am and the kitchen is open till 10pm. I say check it out if you haven't yet.

The chemical smell in the waterCategory: water
It has been back again for a bit. I seriously cannot stand it. I won't even wash my salad with it anymore because the salad ends up smelling too.
I want to know what causes it. Its smells sort of like permanent marker. Its not my house either, I smell it in other places. Its almost like it replaced the fishy smell of zebra muscle that used to be in the water.
Is it possible that it is some sort of thing to kill them off. Last time I wrote about it in 2008 (e:paul,44701), (e:matthew) linked to a buffalo news article but the link is gone and I cannot remember what it was. Thats probably a side effect of the chemical itself, lol.

It happening again and it happend again two weeks ago. It's not chlorine gas because I let the water sit in a jar overnight and it's still very intense.

Scent is a funny thing.... People adjust to things... I would think that people with with allergies would be more prone to smelling more things.... There is no real reason for that thought other then it seems to make sense.... I guess the best example I have is many people can't tell one others have been smoking but most ex-smokers pick up that scent from a mile away not a real mile but you know what I mean.....

Are you saying I have a big nose? Because I do lol and when its not allergic I am hyper sensitive to smell.
We do have a water filtration system but I have to replace the filter this weekend.
Someone told me it happens during the time of year when they replace the chloramine with plain old chlorine when the lake "turns over." Not sure what that really means though.

-I love the smell of markers or maybe just how the smell makes me feel...Ha
-But from water um no...
-I wonder if you are hyper sensitive to smell in other words other people wouldn't notice it...
- I think you are onto something about it being to kill off stuff that is bad for you
- Where I'm a bit confused and maybe it is just my bad memory or maybe I'm think of a blog from the past... But I thought you guys had an entire water filtration system in your house and then on the sink as well....
-In terms of the Buffalo news.... Think they still have the article it is just in the archives and that is a pay service so......

this honestly doesn't surprise me. the issues start at a very young age and students who are failing in 4th grade are unlikely to graduate high school. it has little to do with the amount of money spent on education in most places and more to do with factors such as home life, cultural values, quality of teachers... it's upsetting but the reality is that many teachers leaves education for these reasons. qualified educated people pursue other avenues because teaching often had little incentive... i am going to graduate in december and wondering if i will even bother to enter a classroom of my own. i might be better off, worked way less, and more happy in an office job that will likely pay more and have better benefits. this isn't good news for failing students... but the issues in a classroom go way beyond education and it is sad. i had students who weren't fed at home, how can they focus on school if they aren't getting basic needs met? i just don't think i can take on all of that... i'd rather just volunteer time to a charity than make it my life.
-I have a theory on why that is that number....
1. That number is for the city schools not the area of Buffalo and the burbs I wonder what the numbers are of other areas...
2. A lot of the good students have been moved to the burbs or private schools
3. Buffalo has a two Tier System... You have schools like Tech and Honors that you have to get into... Then schools that are kids who aren't good enough students to get into those schools...
---> If you are a good teacher do you want to go to a good school or a bad school... Well a good school so what happens is ... Bad schools get bad teachers.... Students whom could get helped out by better students get dragged down by poor students instead of up.. And the cycle continues....
But see a lot of it starts at home... If you are taught Education is Important and see it at home you will do better in school.. But if mom or dad isn't educated how can they teach you to be.....
How to fix it.......
Maybe make Hutch Tech and City Honors a program and you take those tough classes in your Hood?
Don't cut Music and art classes cause they teach another way to learn?
