Gypsy Moths in the City of Buffalo?
Category: buffalo
This property on summer street between deleware and elmwood has gypsy moths in their front yard. I can't believe they, or their neighbors haven't gotten rid of them. I am think about killing them myself. The thought of gypsy moths infesting the city freaks meeting out. Is there someone to call about this?

also, we used to have gypsy moth tents in one tree in my parents house. They were about that big and I always freaked out about them but they never really hurt the tree much at all. They eventually stopped coming back.

I think you may be confusing the Cooperative Extension with the ILR: you see the ILR is Industrial Labor Relations, a different part of the university from the Co-Op extension. Maybe try contacting the East Aurora office instead.

I wrote to them, here it is: I found what I think was a gypsy moth nest on summer street between Delaware and Elmwood. I am especially concerned about this as I live and have a large garden only a few block away on Linwood and North.

Have you seen other cases of them in the city? Not sure what should be done.

The tree is on the front lawn directly to the left of the large glass and titor house on the south side of the street. I posted a picture of the nest here.

:::link:::

I would be happy to direct someone to the location if required. If you are the wrong person, do you know who to contact?
tinypliny - 07/31/11 22:32
You know I am always surprised that you notice these things.. I think I must be walking with my eyes closed because I go by that block a million times and have never noticed it. Same with the maple tree blight. After you pointed it out, all I see is blight and moths everywhere. '

In fact I think this office might also be able to answer the maple tree blight question..
tinypliny - 07/31/11 22:21
Can you send them an email with your pic and the exact address? They have to take this sort of infestation seriously.
tinypliny - 07/31/11 22:19
I am not sure they are open at 9:50 PM on a Sunday evening...
paul - 07/31/11 22:06
Did you call?
tinypliny - 07/31/11 21:54
The USDA website has some detailed information on these moths. Apparently they are one of the most highly studied species in N.America. :::link::: and :::link:::

From their site:
"Over the last 20 years, several millions of acres of forest land have been aerially sprayed with pesticides in order to suppress outbreak gypsy moth populations. Though some areas are treated by private companies under contract with land owners, most areas are sprayed under joint programs of state governments and the USDA Forest Service. Your local extension service can provide more detailed information about programs in your area."

I followed that link to :::link::: the Cooperative Extension System Offices of USDA which lead me to Cornell University Cooperative Extension :::link::: which lead me to Erie County Cooperative Extension: :::link:::

And this is the website you need: :::link:::

It sound good. I am totally getting it next time. :::link:::
uncutsaniflush - 07/31/11 20:54
It's chicken made by using equipment from the Broaster Company. If memory serves, it's some sort of combination of deep frying and pressure cooking with spices . I had some when I lived in Tennessee, it was quite yummy.

Banana Bug
Category: food
So I woke up and rushed out for the garden walk this morning. On the way out of the kitchen I grabbed a banana and was eating it in the backyard without looking. When I finally looked down I noticed there was a wiggling worm and worm poops inside, yuck!

The garden walk
Category: buffalo
Today we went on the garden walk with (e:Matthew)'s mom. Although I love little summer, I can't stand being so crowded.

I know I am biased but our garden is totally amazing. I wish more people came that way. Everyone goes where the clusters are. Maybe if our neighbors do it next year.

Here are some of the pictures I took.

Didn't know it was a voo doo doll but the bush doll is wild.... I see we went to a few of the same places.... Heard someone say it was so hot (meaning the place to be) they had Police there today.... I think on of the problems with "Little" it was just summer when I grew up and it was one way the other way also, is that some of the walk ways are so thin you can only go in and barely that.....
paul - 07/31/11 15:33
If you look closely you can see its actually a George bush voodoo doll.
tinypliny - 07/31/11 15:09
My favourite: The fallen scary man!

I think I am going stop by your garden in a little while because I just want to see it on the garden walk day. :)

Mixology Buffalo
Category: buffalo
This place sounds interesting: a social scene combining music, art, and technology. I am curious what it will be like.

Got this message this morning.

guest says: I saw your post re: Mixology. I believe he is having a sneak peek open house this Wednesday from 6-9. He's not open yet but he was going to give the community an opportunity to see what he has done and plans on doing. The place is all set up and looks amazing. He will have complimentary wine and beer Wednesday evening. I plan on stopping by with a few neighbors. Just thought you might be interested. Have a great day!
