In praise of Fedora and Gnome 3.
Category: linux
I have switched!

Thanks to some super-human effort by (e:paul), I am finally on planet Fedora and being awed by Gnome 3.

How superawesome is it that you can just start keying in ANYTHING that comes to your mind and if its an application it comes up directly and if not, you can just hit the wiki or google button. It finally re-defines having internet at your fingertips. Now if the browser could simply BE my desktop, that would be the next step to having the net RIGHT there.

LOVING it completely! It is like I have stepped into the next century!

Now, if only I could make this blasted wireless card work and the skype camera brightness light up more and get this flash installed...

i never use it anymore. It hit windows key, type what I want hit enter.
tinypliny - 07/29/11 21:37
heh. I hate that its on the left. I am a right hander. Its terrible. :)

(e:tinypliny) if you right click on an app you can add it to your favorites bar. But I bet you already knew that.

Yes hilarity ensued when I scripted java. But it can be learned. It's not that hard.
tinypliny - 07/29/11 20:59
I like the keyboard aspect of it but I am going to just make shortcuts for the programs I use so often.
tinypliny - 07/29/11 20:59
Liking Gnome 3 thus far... but there is some inflexibility that I don't know how to get around. (e:Paul) told me EVERYTHING is configurable but via javascripting... The thing is I don't know javascript so it becomes a bit tougher.

I've been using Fedora 15 and Gnome 3 on the hex-core box for over a month. I've decided that I like Gnome 3 better than Ubuntu's Unity. However, and this is a big however, Gnome 3 ain't friendly with older equipment. On the eee 900a, it's a crap-shoot if you get gnome 3 or gnome fallback when you boot. Same thing on the hp box. Oh wells!

Realtek compile with F15 was easy:
1. Make sure you have kernel-devel, kernel-headers and gcc
2. Download the RTL8191SE-VA2 driver for linux kernel > 2.6.35 from :::link:::
3. go into your download directory and untar the file
4. cd into the directory created by extracting the file
5. type make
6. sudo make install (just make sure you are in the wheel group before hand - as root "usermod -g wheel YOUR_USER" then open a new terminal window and you can start to sudo

Terry Babble Bird

Behold, the Birdman Terry!

::DOWNLOAD SOUND::

Quite honestly, I have no idea how (e:Terry) even does that. I thought only birds had the laryngeal apparatus to produce such an elaborate guttural/chirping sound. I also heard (e:Terry)'s operatic take on one of George Clinton band's songs. It was nothing short of amazing. Which, begs the question:

Terry, why aren't you in musical theatre?

It worked for me fine in fedora last time I tried. It was on the mac it refuses to share files for some reason.

"Then I couldn't bluetooth connect her phone to my comp."

Why is that?! I am trying to do this right now and the connection is always failing. My comp is able to see the device and my phone is able to see my comp. What is going on.... The pairing succeeds but the "connection" fails even though I say okay. Most frustrating.
tinypliny - 07/29/11 17:17
turn up the volume, it starts after a bit like a real bird call. :)
metalpeter - 07/29/11 17:16
On my computer didn't try the download but when I hit play I didn't hear anything.....

On Another note I remember some pictures from a long ago post of people at a Stadium In a stadium in Cleveland trying out for American Idol but I think it was like before it really blew up....Anyone remember who tried out?
tinypliny - 07/29/11 15:33
You did some complicated thing for your flash player for F15 that day. Was it this? :::link:::
paul - 07/29/11 01:44
Wow, this went on a frickin huge deal this was. The estrip app which it was recorded with would not attach it to the blog. The tiny didn't have the flash player for regular upload. Then I couldn't bluetooth connect her phone to my comp. Eventually, I gmailed it to myself. Then the mac converted the mp4 file to m4a. So I tried to upload no good. I then used faad to convert the m4a to wav and then lame to encode the mp3 from that.

Oooh, sorry I got in the way, I didn't realize you were filming.

You did great on your bike. When are we biking again?
tinypliny - 07/29/11 17:13
It was! We missed you! I biked after 3 years and (e:Heidi) was my bike-task-master. She didn't let me get off my bike. It was harrowing to say the least.
metalpeter - 07/29/11 17:12

I thought about going to see George Clinton think I should have maybe gone....

Picture wise it looks like he is wresting his wrist on the skyway.....
tinypliny - 07/29/11 12:45
I say we post more convincing one where we don't smirk and make horrible faces.
paul - 07/29/11 12:40
If something ever happens to it, they are totally going to hunt us down.
