Klassy Pub Crawl 2010
So me and my friend Rachelle have really been wanting to go to Bob's Branch Office which is a bar in Kenmore that I swear is only open like during the day for the real hardcore people. We also have been wanting to go to Del Denby s on Hertel. They both just seemed like interesting places. So with that start we made a list of different places we wanted to go on a weeknight to experience the regulars experience. It was not as interesting as we thought it would be but a fun night all in all, here is a little review of what we did.

We started at 7pm:
Bob's Branch Office: closed! not a good start! how sad! we will have to take a day off of work and go there one afternoon!

Mitchell's Beef and Barrel (or something like that). It is on Grand Island Blvd perhaps or Sheridan, like by Sheridan Park area. Anywho so we go there and we are the only patrons. WE order a captain and coke and a vodka soda and bubble gum shots. Not too expensive but the drinks are measured which is never a good thing. We only stay for the one drink and when we are leaving a few other people walk in.

Next we were going to Pokey Joes on like near Grant Street, I think on Austin. On the way there we see a bar called NiteCap once again I believe on like Sheridan ext/grand island blvd. It had a martini glass on the sign so it must be classy. That place was more what we were looking for. It was pretty crowded with an older crowd. Our drinks were like 4 dollars for the 2 and they were ok. They don't have any fruit though to put in the drinks cuz as the bartender said "it just goes bad". The bartender there tried to get this one lady to finish the bottle of crown and she's like oh no i never could, and three shots later, yeah lets say she did it. Oh and they had one of those machines wher eyou can win stuffed animals which i thought was an interesting to have there at a bar.

Next up was Pokey Joes, but unfortunately just like Bob's Branch it was closed. Not sure if it is closed for good or was closed for the night. So we headed to our next stop

Skyway Tavern on Niagara Street. It was actually kinda nice inside tough they had a liimited selection of alcohol. The bartender was a larger huge breasted older lady who was definitely on some kind of something, I'll be hopeful and guess cold medicine. She was sooo out of it. It was incredibly complicated for her to make a vodka tonic and captain and coke. She had to ask one of the patrons where the captain was. She was basiclaly completely popping out of her shirt and we believe she fell at one point and noone reacted even one bit, like oh it happens all the time. Some converstaions we overheard included, the one friend who is in jail again, and one man ordered "the best schnapps you got", is there a best schnapps? we definitely decided we had to move on but would stop back there on the way back.

So then we headed off to the Pink. We both have been there many times before but we wondered what it was like at like 830 instead of 3am. IT was quiet and not too busy and the bartender kinda completely ignored us. I had to pee here and unfortunately as most of you know , it is prolly the grossest bathroom in all bars in buffalo.

So then it was off to Hertel. First stop Checkers which is up closer to Main Street. It had a little crowd and the bartender who I am tihnking might alos be the owner was suuuper friendly and nice. Unfortunately it smells like urnial/toilets, it makes Cathode smell like flowery goodness. I would go there again .

Then we went to Del Denbys, one we were super excited about. The bartender there was really nice. There was a man passed out on the bar with a beer, a mixed drink and a shot laid out in front o fhim. I guess he never got to drinking them before he fell asleep on the bar. It didn't turn out as great as we thought but it was good. Here as everywhere else we thought there would be more people out. I know it was wednesday but it was a sabres game and the first home game post olympics, we thought isn't that when like regular local bars are filled ?

So then we went to Shadow to meet up with Rachelle's boyfriend. That is more a like regualr bar with young people and sorta classyness well not classy but more like bar/club seeting than like corner bar. Justin taught me how to be tough and make "i'm gonna kill you faces" but I tihnk they were ruined by my use of spirit fingers while making them.

Sooo after Shadow we went to get waffle fries and nacho chips and cheese at ETS which hoepfully is not all over my car right now cuz we might have spilled some. SO then we tried to go back to Skyway to make sure the bartender survived the night but alas it was closed at that time. OOh we also tried to go to Sensationz in Riverside, but that was closed too..

SO al lin all it was a fun night but not exactly what we expected. we will have to do it on a night when there are more people out. We want to meet and chat with the people who hang out at these bars all the time. I really believe though that SKyway Tavern could become my new favorite hangout!!!!

jenks - 03/05/10 15:22
you should add the malamute to your rotation, in south buffalo. I have gone there a couple times at 9am after getting off work.

"Justin taught me how to be tough and make "i'm gonna kill you faces" but I tihnk they were ruined by my use of spirit fingers while making them."

I used to work overnights waitressing at Kosta's (right next to Del Denby's). Anyway, after hellish Friday & Saturday nights serving people who got to be partying (and obnoxious), we all used to get off work at 7 am, and wait til 7:30 am which was when Del Denbys' opened. I'm telling you, you want to truly experience it? Get there at 8:00 Saturday morning, for sure. There would always be a bunch of old dudes there drinking coffee (why would you go to a bar for coffee?)anyway.
I don't drink beer and was on a Southern Comfort kick at the time, and I once did 12 shots of Southern between 7:30 & 9 in the morning, took a cab home, then puked for 3 days. Good ole del denby's. Needless to say I have not drank Southern since then. No, scratch that, tried to once and it almost came up quicker than it went down!
I love dive bars. good times, good times...

"and one man ordered "the best schnapps you got", is there a best schnapps?"

That made me giggle.

You think like a 9 year old girl!
Yesterday was my 9 year old godchild and her brother's bday party. I always seem to find really good gifts for her that she really likes. Everyone is like how do you find such great things! My cousin jenny figured me out though, I have a mind very much like a 9 year old girl so i look around for something I really want but can't really buy for myself and get that! It works like a charm!
tinypliny - 02/14/10 13:25
So what does a nine year old girl get (or wants)? I am dying to know.
paul - 02/14/10 12:36
That is so true.

At work customers can donate money to the haiti earthquake relief and when one girl , about my age was asked, she replied "what earthquake?" SHE HAD NOT HEARD ANYTHINGA BOUT IT! THIS WAS YESTERDAY! seriously even if you don't watch the news or read a newspaper it is everywhere! What rock could she be living under?
lilho - 01/21/10 01:43
i don't care how dumb you are. seriously??? she didn't know?? people like this need a slap in the face.
mk - 01/20/10 21:29
I bet she's in college still. I seriously feel like I was cut off from the entire world when I was at Fredonia. I doubt I would have known about Haiti...or MLK Day...or banana-shaped runts...

A Coupla Things
I don't write as often anymore, here are some thing I have been thinking of...

1.For Chirsmtas I got my mom of a gift of I am gonna take her to see movies each month for the year. Well our first one was Avatar in 3d at the IMAX. We bought the tickets ahead of time cuz I heard it had been selling out ((e:libertad) went with us to). Then we got to the theater like a half hour early but still it was already filled and we had to sit like only 3 rows back which was too close. That wasn't horrible though. BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT...my poor mom got motion sickness and threw up in her popcorn. I felt so bad, I looked over and could tell she was feeling sick and asked if she wanted to leave but she didn't cuz she didn't want to miss it but her eyes were closed for most of the show. I felt so bad... but other than that the movie was really cool. I am not a fan of IMAX really though, it makes me feel a little queasy too!

2. I really hate the cartoon Marmaduke. Like makes me sick to my stomach reading it, it just bores me to death and I hate it. It really like makes me angry that I have to look at it and i have no idea why. It just really bothers me. Nothing in particular about but everytime after I read it, I would feel, why did I just waste my life. You are prolly saying then well just don't read it. But i have like this obsessivecompulsion to read every part of a paper even if i am not interested in it, like every article and comic. But over the last few months I have been able to stop reading Marmaduke. It is really hard to like not read it but I feel so much if i better if i don't. I know tihs osunds crazy but it really is a battle every sunday.

3. Pulled my super nintendo out of the attic and played it at (e:libertads) last night and it was super fun. I forgot how fun it is! I beat super mario 2 in like a few hours where i remember it taking like 10 years the first time. I am definitley more of a just try to get through it kinda guy though that spend time finding all the secret tings.

4. GOLDEN GLOBES TONIGHT! Can't wait! Love life, love globes, love gold, love celebrites, love blt dip, love jill's house to watch award ceremonies, love it all! can't wait!

5. I really really believe i am gonna move out in may or june. But i say that all the time but i really believe it this time.

6. (e:mk) got me this awesome thing for christmas , we exchange our gifts in late january to extend the season, it is a game of twister but instead of the oclors it has the Little Miss and Mr characters that I love! Can't wait to play it!

7. I am sick of places forgetting my bacon. Jims' steakout often forgets to put the bacon on my chicken finger club subs. And at Missisisipi Mudds at the eastern hills yesterday they forgot to but bacon on my bacon cheesebuger but I had already eaten half before I relaized so i coudn't really do anyting about it. Maybe it is the world telling me not to eat so much bacon.

8. I don't know what I would do if Rachelle didn't work with me. She is the only thing that keeps me sane in the chaos that is Rite Aid Pharmacy.

9. Relatedly, I am addited to the Rite Aid game of life where you get stickers and collect on the board to win prizes. I have def changed my buying habits to fit with the products that give you extra pieces such as switching from dr. pepper to coke so i can get an extra piece.

10. I'm very happy lately . all around happy and it feels good!

oh i was only gonna do 10 but i thought of another exciting thing

11. I found the wicker park soundtrack at the FYE that is goi gout of business on Transit. I have bene looking for it for so long and could never find it. (i know i oculd buy it online but I like the thrill of the chase). I had it and it was my favorite cd but I lost it like a year or 2 ago i believe it may have been in my car that got ttotalled by the drunk driver. I have not been able to find it since and was so excited to find it! It is very good though it wasn't as amazing as I thought I rememberd it to be.

ok that's all for now folks

lilho - 01/18/10 00:40
ok, and i think i hate mostly the same though process as you whenever i used to read it. plus the dog was so ugly...
lilho - 01/18/10 00:38
i've always hated marmaduke too!!!
