Poll
If you work on the office, how much space do you need to concentrate? How crammed in would you be willing to get?

jason - 12/11/09 10:48
I'm the same way Jim, I get a bit claustrophobic. I am very very thankful that I have my own office, my own door, and can shut people out when I need peace and quiet. Glad it worked out for you.
jim - 12/11/09 10:24
Just to wrap this post up, everything worked better than expected!
jim - 12/09/09 20:43
6' x 6'
heidi - 12/09/09 20:15
6'? 3'x2'? Definitely not enough for me. I haven't worked in a "proper" office for a long time. Sharing with chicks, rabbits, and turtles is definitely not typical and probably not included in space calculations. Jill, Kelly and I share about 300-350 square feet with Bill & Shane occupying space irregularly. There's a back room that's probably 500 square feet where we keep files, Shane's snow & surfboards, the fridge, microwave, coffee pot, recycling & composting.

The last office-with-door I had was 8x10 (with window!). Very nice. A cube I had at Verizon was probably 6'x8'. I used headphones a lot.

That's an awesome point Tinypliny, and I guess the root issue of my own personal concern, being density as a proxy indicator for noise/distraction issues. I get claustrophobic.

Anyways, I said I require 6' of space so I think things will work out. I've got a big monitor plus laptop and need some space for plants or I'll be very unhappy.
tinypliny - 12/09/09 14:44
I work in an office with 14 other officemates (at full capacity). I think its not a matter of space. Its a matter of noise levels. If people are constantly chattering all the time,

a) you are bound to get into some of the conversations
b) your concentration is pretty much shattered every few minutes
c) you are bound to get somewhat annoyed after a while and detour to the library more often

I could personally work in a corner, without a desk on the floor, with 25 other people if they mind their business and are quiet.
jim - 12/09/09 14:43
Oops. Don't worry Zobar.

We're getting more office space and their initial thoughts of space usage were... unrealistic. I talked them down from their plans :)

I'm the office curmudgeon/pessimist. I used to go along to get along but no more.

james - 12/09/09 14:37
It is time to organize, comrade.
zobar - 12/09/09 14:37
[an inauspicious question...]

I once worked at a .com with twelve people crammed into a 500sqft suite. There was one guy in the network closet which was a coat closet, a dude in the conference/lunch room, the two designers shared a regular-sized desk, and one of the partners worked in the hallway on a small rolling desk, of the kind you might buy in a department store for a child's room.

There was a local company which has since gone out of business which had the president and I think five or six developers and a designer in a ~150sqft room. They were located inside another company and could use their facilities, but that was their total permanent space allotment.

Coffee Break

Nice! Is this office or home?

I wanted to drink coffee after seeing your post - but then I remembered coffee makes me feel somewhat anxious. I have dropped it for now and seeing how I am getting along with the occasionally panic mode I tend to go into.

Useless Message
"No previously installed versions of Office were moved to the Trash."

image

I mean if I'm installing Office on a computer without Office, why would I be confused about non-existant versions of Office not being moved to the trash?
jim - 12/07/09 10:59
Either the installer should skip that step, or if it needs to show a message it should just say "no previous versions of Office were found".
tinypliny - 12/07/09 10:56
It's M$ logic. Get with the inane program.
