Microsoft patents sudo system used in Mac OS X, Linux?
The USPTO recently granted Microsoft a patent, No. 7,617,530, which describes a method for running a command as an administrator. The filing has sparked outrage by many, including Groklaw blogger Pamela Jones, who believe the company has simply rebranded the sudo Unix command developed in the 1980s by members of the Computer Science department at SUNY/Buffalo.
The "rights elevator" patent covers "systems and/or methods... that enable a user to elevate his or her rights." Microsoft focuses on an embodiment utilizing a graphic user interface presented when the current account lacks the proper privileges for an operation. The interface then identifies accounts that have administrative privileges required for certain tasks.
The patent terms have lead to speculation that Microsoft may be attempting to receive licensing revenue from companies utilizing forms of sudo in their operating systems. The technology is currently integrated into GNU/Linux systems and Mac OS X.
Others argue that, while the patent includes sudo references, it is actually based on the graphic interface which only pops up after the user attempts to perform a task outside of their account's rights. Similar systems, however, are common to most operating systems.

microsoft patenting sudo?Category: computers
I seriously can't believe that microsoft got a patent for running commands as an administrator. Are the judges in these matters at all knowledgeable of the subject matter? The best part of the article was learning that sudo was developed at Suny Buffalo. I wonder how that factoid escaped me for so long.

I just could stand the pink anymore. We spend 6 days straight painting now but honestly the hardest park was rehabbing the dormer pillars, detail and windows. It took about two weeks of sanding, scraping, priming and cutting glass, reglazing, chiseling, etc. I cannot wait for that to be over and that only 1 of 6 dormers. The rest will have to wait until the spring.

wow, ambitious. We are doing the same thing, except scraping and sanding all the paint first, it takes a while.
...wait a minute, who got jealous about Extreme Makeover and ran out to get paint?

The most unpatriotic momentCategory: america
I am not very big patriot but I am also not an America hater. Anyone who witnessed my crazy moment after lots of hours painting in the freezing cold must think I am such a jerk.
I appologize. I was trying to move this two story, heavy ladder and the American flag on our porch kept whipping me in the face. I'm response, I grabbed it and whipped it at the ground before considering the significance of it being veterans day.
It was one of the knee jerk anger reactions. I could have whipped anything that was hitting me to the ground at that specific moment. Afterwards, I felt kind of bad.
Sorry America.

Schuele paint on Main st. in BuffaloCategory: painting
So we bought this Bejamin More house paint for the exterior of the house at Schuele paint on main street. The paint seemed great, it's the color we wanted and it coats great. Then when we ran out and went back for more, they had run out of the Benjamin Moore base and told us they had Philadelphia brAnd base instead, which according to the worker was the same and would match exactly.
In the middle of the afternoon yesterday I had a hunch it was not going to match and brought it back. The guy reassured me when dry they would be identical. I waited 24 hours and it was clear which part was painted with the philiadelphia base paint.
So I brought them back and they replaced those cans with the bejamin Moore paint at their other location. (e:Terry) picked it up. It applies so much better and matches the original paint in color and finish exactly.
The real question is why did they try so hard to convince me the shittier paint would be the same when they could have just sent me to their other location the whole time. Especially when I brought it back the first time. I am so angry because the whole paint/repaint, use shittier paint, pickup new paint on niagara falls blvd wasted so much time.
