Living Simply
(e:Janelle) and I have been trying to drive less, make more of our own food, shop locally, and all that good stuff. (e:Janelle) has even taken it to the next level, and discovered that vinegar and baking soda makes a great cleaning solution.

So last night, she asked me to go buy paper towels, and I looked at her and asked, completely straight faced, "Don't we make our own paper towels now?"

I thought I was so funny.

vincent - 06/06/08 21:50
That was always a fun activity in school as a kid, the baking soda + vinegar Volcano!!! We would make a mountain out of paper mache, inset the baking soda in the crater and ERUPTION, with the vinegar of course!!!
fellyconnelly - 06/06/08 21:08
i bet she didn't find it as funny as you did, did she?
but congrats on reducing your carbon footprint!

Penguins win
Category: sports
12:47pm. 3rd OT. The cup finals go back to Pittsburgh.
metalpeter - 06/03/08 17:42
I saw like the first hour of the game and was going to go back to it but passed out, sounds like an amazing game was to be had.
jason - 06/03/08 17:03
Damn, Drew. I watched until the end of the first OT. On form, it really looked like the Wings were going to be the team to end it. I was about to call and apologize for bringing my Buffalo sports luck to the Pens.
drew - 06/03/08 15:17
yup. Fleury was amazing. It's now 3-2
jenks - 06/03/08 15:10
so is it 3-2 detroit now?
chico - 06/03/08 11:41
I'm with MrMike... Fleury played out of his head. What a game! Tired today though, oof.
mrmike - 06/03/08 09:06
They were looking a little sloppy at the beginning of the first ot, but I guess the tide started to turn. Fluery was incredible

Darling Paint
Category: darling
Tomorrow morning I meet with Darling Paint. They painted our house last year, and even though they were a little more expensive, we went with them because they had a good reputation and seemed to use higher quality paint.

Needless to say, we were surprised at the number of cracks in the paint in our house. We also have been finding splashes and little errors over the past year. We paid significantly over the lowest bid, because we believed we were paying for quality. Tomorrow we will see if we got it.

Everybody makes mistakes. If Darling Paint makes it right, then this post will be amended to become a positive review. If they don't, than my guess is that an account of how they did not will be on the first page of google when somebody searches "Darling Paint."

The awesome power of (e:strip)!

UPDATE!

Some developments.

Bill Darling came to our else and personally explained that the cracking is expected in a wood house as old as ours. His explanation made sense, and I appreciated the service of a personal visit to inspect the cracks. He has also been helpful in looking up the color of the paint to do touch ups (originally, he had planned on leaving the leftover paint, but that is nowhere to be found. Neither the painters nor (e:janelle) and I were thinking about it as they left)

Mr Darling found this post. He didn't like it--so I am leaving the original post (above) as it is to keep a public record. I thought it was fair, he thought it was a slam--hopefully my update provides the rest of the story (He also mentioned that he is going to write a response, which is fair. He mentioned all of his charity work, including Brush-up Buffalo, which I think is great). He has taken care of us, despite some other, more pressing concerns, and he continues to do so.

Here's a link to their website:

So there's the rest of the story. Yes, the paint is cracking, but it would happen with any painter--it is one of the joys of owning an old house. If a painter tells you that it won't crack, they are likely lying to you. Darling paint has done everything I have asked to take care of my concerns, and I am grateful.
janelle - 07/29/08 07:49
The cracking has to do more specifically with the insulation that was added without any venting. The hot air has to go somewhere and it escapes through the wood, cracking the paint. At least, that's what Drew told me that Darling Paints told him.

The old owners also put dry wall up in the attic without proper ventilation and Drew had to tear all the dry wall out and put in vents.
paul - 07/28/08 23:21
We had our rental property painted a couple years ago and it is wood second story, mid 1800s. I don't think it is cracking at all - at least I have never noticed it. I will check the next time I am there. Can you take a picture of the cracks so we can see what you are talking about? I am so curious.
heidi - 07/28/08 23:12
We used Sears Ultra Weatherbeater on our old house - it's really important to scrape off the old paint before applying new paint. The parts that got painted five years ago look great. I'll try to take pix tomorrow so you can see what it should look like. Our house is approx. 110 years old with the original cedar siding.
metalpeter - 07/28/08 19:27
Well what would have been funny to say when he said he didn't like finding this was "Why Where you Searching for Me on Line" Say it stright faced as if you are about to explode on him, then crack a smile and say I'm just messing with ya, but if you don't like this you really aren't going to like the Sermon I wrote and gave to my Perisheners, Again You have to say it like it really happened and that since sermons are about lessons and learning that you didn't say them by name but since everyone knows you they know what he was talking about, then do the smile and say again I'm just messing with ya, so when you gonna fix the problem. Seriously though I'm glad everything worked out well in the end and that things got fixed.
imk2 - 05/23/08 19:55
although my daughter avoids it like the plague
imk2 - 05/23/08 19:54
yeah i wouldn't blame you!
drew - 05/22/08 10:45
I'm pretty sure that I don't want to share a bathroom with three other women.
imk2 - 05/22/08 10:44
i was looking for one but it was for me and my daughter
drew - 05/22/08 10:26
We have a room, but if somebody stayed there, they would share a bathroom and a kitchen with us--so we haven't been advertising, but just listening to see if somebody we think could live with us needs a place. Do you know somebody that needs a room?
imk2 - 05/22/08 10:23
Drew,
Do you hare a room or rooms or or a flat you are trying to rent out? or was it an offer for tiny only?
paul - 05/21/08 00:19
I can't remember who we had paint our rental property 2 years ago but they did an awesome job. It should still be in great condition after only a year. I would demand they fix it.

P.S. To make it link higher add it to your favorite links and to the chat ;)

Sexxxy Starbucks? Not quite
Category: religion
The next time somebody asks me why people don't go to church anymore, I will show them this link.

I can think of more offensive things. I can think of more offensive things at Starbucks. Anybody who finds that cup of coffee to be erotic has bigger problems than it being on a coffee cup.

metalpeter - 05/16/08 16:58
Here is the thing it does not offend me. But that being said I can see why it would. You have some over weight chick with legs spreed and her boobs showing. But what should be the thing that makes them more angry is that she is a siren, I would think that being a siren is a concept of spirtuality that is not of their belief system. Oh if you ever want to see a hot movie about sex that shows a lot of boobs go see Sirens old movie with Hugh Grant and some famous model naked as one of the sirens. Back to the coffee I think the covering of the boobs is more offensive. The reason being is if the boobs are out you can say it is artsy and a throw back to the old days when heavy girls where considered hot and thin was thought of as being sick. But when the boobs are covered it is like a tease. It is kinda like see you can't see nipples so they don't count as naked boobs. I think it is ok myself but don't know as I would want my young kid there.
jenks - 05/15/08 17:21
woohoo.... 3000 right wing religious conspiracy theorists are going to boycott starbucks. I bet they're quaking in their boots.

It's retarded if you ask me. A total non-issue. Bah.
drew - 05/15/08 16:28
oh yeah: like when John Ashcroft covered the breast of justice with a curtain?

:::link:::

joshua - 05/15/08 16:23
Don't forget the purple Teletubby controversy!

This is just plain ignorant. This graphic, as the article states, is actually a toned down version of the 1st and original logo Starbucks used. You can go to the Starbucks at Pike Place Market in Seattle and see the original logo on the window. For the throwback logo they actually altered it to cover the mermaid's breasts.

As an aside, these social puritans are exactly why I left the Republican Party. They number too many in the GOP for me.
james - 05/15/08 15:51
My god! People will be masturbating in the streets!
