Estrip short outage possible
Category: estrip
Paul,

Just a heads up, one of our two T1 circuits is totally out, so we're essentially running at half speed. Just in case you noticed any slowdowns, that'd be why... I just discovered there isn't so much as link lights from the telco on the circuit card so not good news...

I'm working with Level3 to see what's up - they did warn they might have to do "intrusive troubleshooting" - i.e. take the circuit offline and test it in loopback mode. Last time we had a problem like this, they insisted on testing the good circuit as well as the trouble one, leaving us totally disconnected... so if they go that route again there might be a brief (few minutes) of total outage. Here's to hoping not... that's all I know so far though, but figured I'd pass it on.

Quick Stats Overview of Estrip
Category: stats
So I have been doing lots of Adobe Flex stuff and I wanted to see what version of flash player people had to see if it was worth using Flex for estrip dev and I noticed that the Flash 9 player is used by 99%+ of userw. That is some seriously insane market penetration. Thanks youtube and xtube. I freakin love Flex. I am so excited about like more excited than I have been about anything web in so long.

Here are some visitor stats

Notice that Firefox is now more popular than IE!

I am a physician, blah, blah, blah
Category: estrip
I find it totally frustrating that this irate person who cannot provide me with the information required to handle the situation. I am not afraid of her attorney. We have been through this before. Why would should not have provided me with the link in the first place?

The blog is over 1 year old, the girl who posted it is
severely mentally ill, she has been arrested for
attacking my mother and is being arraigned this week,
she hallucinates seeing me and we have a restraining
order against her. She is obsessed with me and I have
not had any contact with her in years nor do I intend
to contact her. I would prefer to not have to contact
my attorney to get this done. I have not lived in
Buffalo nor even visited there in years, I am married
with a husband as well as I am a physician. The
information on your blog is slanderous as well as a
defamation of character and I am assuming that you
have some control over what is posted. She apparently
is not a frequent blogger on your site rather has only
posted 1 random blog and as this comes up when you
google my name it should be removed. So please let me
know what other channels you have for this process.

Then I said:

I am willing to work with you on this. But if you do not give me the link to the blog, I cannot help you. How do you expect me to be able to locate the blog or the girl from the description you have given me in the last two contacts? Do you expect me to search for all blogs over 1 year old written by a girl.

(e:jenks) has solved the mystery! awesome. I was soo curious. Sounds like everyone involved is a bit crazy.
metalpeter - 02/21/08 17:51
Here is my take the person who wrote in claims that the person who wrote the blog stalked and harresed her but the person who wrote the blog says it is the other way around. So one or both of them are lying and you shouldn't have to figure it out. I also think that the blog should stay up. I think if she doesn't want it to show up in search results she should get in touch with google and not you, what happens when you search for her name on ask, or yahoo or is it only google. If it is only google then she needs to be contacting them not you. I don't run the site but I wouldn't do anything except to maybe tell her that you don't control a search engine and she should contact them instead.
ladycroft - 02/21/08 15:25
Weird.
jenks - 02/21/08 15:22
ok I think I figured it out. I went through and looked for people with only one post, and found this. Have to admit, it DOES sound like the poster is a little crazy.

if you google the email address she sent, you get some journal article with her contact info- something about "southwest college of naturopathic medicine"

physician my ass.

Passions? The one with the, ahem, trying to be PC here, "little" person? Cough.
hodown - 02/21/08 14:52
Oh and yes because you are a Physician clearly you are more important than anyone.
hodown - 02/21/08 14:52
This sounds exactly like the Soap Opera Passions that was taken off the air and (e:Mike) was so sad. Well (e:Mike) dispair no more Passions (e:strip) style is back!!
jenks - 02/21/08 13:50
whoa! mother attacks? hallucinations? restraining order? obsession? defamation of character?

This is some good drama!
Who is she talking about?!
dragonlady7 - 02/21/08 09:50
Any slim sympathy I might have had for her is entirely removed by the fact that, indeed, she never tells you what post, what user, what entry, anything. She doesn't even tell you her name so you could Google it yourself!! (And even still, are you expected to scroll through the forty pages of results that come up, and figure out which one it is? Christ, all you've got to go on is that her name is probably Jennifer. For fuck's sake!)
The fact that it's a user who never posts is making it so much more likely that you're going to know the person.

I have this problem all the time at work: people think that they are the only person you are ever going to have to deal with, and are always shocked, and often offended, when you mention that actually you deal with hundreds of people in a day, most of whom have THEIR EXACT PROBLEM. They really hate it when you finish their sentences, too, as they struggle to describe their unique issue. "I know," I say. "I've had four calls just like this today. Here's what I told the others."
"But I [random detail]," they say.
"Yes, that's typical."
"... Oh."
The sensible ones are reassured, the less-so are offended. You know what? You're a unique fucking snowflake, sure, but there are a damn lot of snowflakes out there and they're pretty similar really. Get over yourself.

... Man I'm just on a rant rampage today. :D
zobar - 02/21/08 09:18
Ya, let me read that post before you take it down. It sounds like a real torrid soap opera. And if you don't take it down I suppose she could commiserate with my little French friend over here. (e:zobar,43018)

Ha! I think these people who believe that they are on a higher social pecking order are too arrogant for their own good. Don't they understand the law?
jason - 02/21/08 08:25
Gold. Keep it coming.
mrdeadlier - 02/20/08 23:26
Well, whatever happens don't mention Google's cache or archive.org!

Oops, too late.

Artvoice Best Of Buffalo 2008
Category: artvoice
Well, its that time of year when we normally lose Artvoice's Best of Buffalo contest but this year the category for Best Website is just gone so at least we cannot really lose, or do we pre-lose?

There is a category for best blogger and I selfishly voted for myself. You can feel free to vote for yourselves.

Like the sound of (e:Terry)'s new hack and kill game with the girl with the red hair in the background? Sounds like I am reporting at some battle ground.
metalpeter - 02/16/08 12:52
I voted before I came here, there are all kinds of things I didn't answer because they don't apply to me. I think that there should be a new section devoted just to sports or maybe even a sub catorgory. Say Favortie local sport (like roller derby or college basketball) amature then a sub catgory of favortie team in that sport and then of that team favorite player. Maybe the team part could be elimanted but I would like to see a stronger sports presance maybe there could be more internet stuff also but not sure how you would do that really. Maybe best local site other then artvoice. Maybe even best social networking site (that could include national ones also) or maybe make it networking is there some local job networking sites?
paul - 02/16/08 11:01
Wow, that was fast :::link:::
zobar - 02/15/08 22:57
They actually ditched a number of categories this year … 'Best Blog' as you've noticed has turned into 'Best Blogger,' with 'Best Website' gone [I guess they were fed up with getting trounced in our own people's choice award]. They also got rid of a lot of the snarkier 'Most Rotten Person'-type awards. (e:dragonlady7) was saddened to see the 'Favorite Local Amateur Sports Team' and 'Athlete' awards gone, but in retrospect it beats the alternative [ie, 80 women totally infuriated at each other over a popularity contest].

One idea is to blow the curve in a category nobody participates in. Let me put it this way: when we say 'Blogger,' everyone says 'Buffalo Pundit,' whether they read it or not. But only about six people in the city are going to have an opinion on Buffalo's Best Writer [and if AV's book reviews are any indication, they're probably all terrible writers of terrible poetry]. Or maybe (e:terry) is Buffalo's Best Genre-Defying Artist. How much of AV's aging white readership is really going to have an opinion on Best Soul Food? Can it really compare to (e:matthew)'s hypothetical chicken and gluten-free waffles? Just sayin'.

Another fun idea is to vote as a bloc in a category that does not generally invite consensus. Everyone has an opinion on Loudest Complainer, and they're all different. [Unfortunately I don't think the Loudest Complainer gets a plaque, too bad.] The 24 could certainly be my Favorite House or Building, but there's always the terrible possibility of losing that category to the Terminal.

You can totally win this, and create small amounts of public chaos at the same time - a win-win - if you use a little imagination.

I feel like we should vote as a bloc, so that we have more influence. Shall we have an estrip primary, and then all go and vote for the winner at the artvoice site?
