Went to see Beowulf (3D) this evening at the IMAX. It was a lot of fun to see it. You do not have to know anything about the old poem to enjoy this version. Its been 15 years or so since I have read the verse, which back then I had thought it to be a neat story. The main thing I remembered about it was the spilt between good and evil (or humans and monsters) with Cains killing of Abel. I recollect the mother and son relationship and Beowulf's role. But I didn't remember the details, although I could have taken a glance at the copy of the story I have in my collection. Again, no need to read it to enjoy the movie. Its full of action, gore and a beautifully muscled Beowulf, played by Ray Winstone.
If you don't already know, the movie is in CGI. While the characters maintain a bit of a vacant look, it is a giant step up from the looks of Polar Express (Tom Hanks). The details on some of the people, and most of the scenery and definitely the monsters, is amazing.
A snippet from a film review regarding the look of the actors/actresses:
"Anthony Hopkins looks every bit like Anthony Hopkins, only slightly more wizened, and worryingly more naked. Angelina Jolie gets digital breast implants - would they have given Einstein a bigger brain? As for Ray Winstone in the title role, he's sporting a six-pack that could splinter skulls.."
Jolie definitely looks animated/digital. There aren't any details to her and she looks the most "vacant" of them all. But still gorgeous in the short screen time her character had. The other characters in the movie have a greater 'real' look and 'feel' to them. Veins, hair, eye reflection, skin lines, gorgeous ripped man belly and thighs, and so forth.
See it in the IMAX theater for sure.
My date, "T" and I went to the 6:25 show this evening (Sat), which the tickets were purchased online earlier in the day (rock on!), since when we tried to go last night, the shows were sold out. The show we went to today sold out early as well.
I imagine it will be like that all weekend and then some.
ok, i am way over due for bed.. sleep.. dreams..

yep, I'm alive and all that. No comp problems, just verbage issues. Pretty much just havent had the words come out regardless of topic, content, context and so forth, and its not from lack of thoughts swirling in my head!
I'll try that multi language translation technique, (e:james). Maylay?? who knew.
(e:tinypliny), I love your story starters. No one jumped on to add to them though, sadly :(

First of all with (e:tinypliny)'s writing style anything I write will sound so plane that there is no way I can continue the story. Secondly it is good to see (e:theecarey) is here I haven't seen anything on here or myspace so I assumed there was an internet problem of some kind.

No probs, (e:theecarey). I just thought it was almost like an animation. The head was buried and then it came out -- lips, nose and all and the laser pointer appeared!
LOL @ (e:James)' comment. Also: Get with THE STORY-TELLING PROGRAM! You cannot just offer random advice, you have got to keep the tale going!! Only (e:theecarey) can be excused because she has a block and she originated the thread. You, on the other hand, dear sir, have NO excuse!
And continuing (since the tale must go on):
A random phrase from Coleridge drifted into her consciouness as she drifted up and away from the aeons of solitude. She tried to lick her cracked lips but, to her utmost horror, discovered that her face was frozen in perpetual astonishment. Her lower jaw was still one with the volcanic throes of the unfathomable depths.

sorry (e:Tinypliny)! I didnt know there was a comment from you until after I changed the drawing. It looked so different after I posted it, that I didnt know if it even looked like what it was meant to (upper portion of head, eyes, hair). I tried to keep it similar though.. :)

When ever I get writers block I come up with a new technique.
Writers block means I am having trouble with content.
So I perform some process on already existing text and it gets my juices flowing.
For example, take a block of text. Stick it in some translation software. Translate it into French, then Korean, then Spanish, then Malay, and back again.
But then, I don't know what you are writing.

I'll take another turn, since your cool pic has evolved a bit (you now have to re-post the earlier one!!! Come on, my teaser was b(i)ased on that!)
One fine day, her fine eyelashes opened to possibilities and her nostrils flared with the scent of... charred fused corals. A few feet away from her lay a gleaming cylindrical device. An eery red strobe of light emanated from its evil confines.
The mermaid's sighs of bafflement deepened as she slowly shook her curls out and struggled to lift her head from the swirling underworld of darkness and slime.

Aha! Communal story-telling. Just what I need!
Once upon a time, there was a mermaid who was buried in the depths of the Atlantic. Her sighs punctuated the ocean with waves of query...
Who's next??

Second LifeCategory: games
Second Life is crashing, not loading, freezing.. whatever, it isn't working.,
Makes me sad.
Its a cool, rainy day, and I wanted to spend it inside eating Doritos (which I havent had in many years) and playing around in Second Life.
grrr
Where else may I go that could be equally if not more entertaining?

Dwarf Hamster bedding - what kind?Category: animals
ok.
I've commandeered the cutest dwarf hamster ever from my new friend/activity partner, "T". Every time I go over to his place, I am loving on his hamster, George. The little critter and I bonded quickly, eventually leading me to take him home forever more to keep. YAY!
So, although I was provided a little bit of bedding and food, I will need to buy some more very soon. Who knew there are so many types of bedding to choose from?! Hamster bedding/litter sold in the store is usually pine or cedar shavings. I have also noticed, "alpine" shavings as well. Which do I get?
In reading about cedar/pine shavings, it is reported that the use of it in cages is actually quite toxic and can contribute to respiratory illness among other ones. Cedar seems to be particularly bad; also happens to be the option I liked most, at the time, not that I have used it yet.
Alpine, according to the various literature, is considered non-toxic. I may purchase that.
However, I would like to consider the options-- and see what others opinions are on this. Does anyone know of alternatives that would be appropriate, environmentally friendly and super safe for a russian dwarf hamster? I am open to anything..
Thanks in advance!
I'm really disturbed that the cedar and pine shavings are packaged for use as bedding/litter for these creatures, when in actuality they are toxic and can greatly reduce their already short life span.

all this toxicity info is making me sick.
hopefully not literally..
and things are marketed as safe to use. I feel so naive, although I know better than to assume a product wont harm me or my animals. Yet we *should* be able to use items with some level of confidence.
gah!
and you and lib were talking about moth balls... not that i use them, but people do..
we need an estrip alternative resource guide. Put all of our green posts together somehow...

from the bag I bought:
"..made from reclaimed pulp waste. This short-fiber pulp can't be made into paper; its free of dyes, inks, clay and chemicals used in the paper making process. It is processed to remove potentially harmful aromatic hydrocarbons that exist in pine and cedar oils. Its tested for contaminants and sanitized to 380 degrees to reduce bacteria, mold and fungus...Environmentally friendly, biodegradable."
also have been reading up on "Kaytee Soft-Sorbant" brand. Seems very similar.
aslo.. can be flushed in small quantities, or.. "makes excellent compost or mulch after use".
I think some stores or companies are pulling the cedar off the shelf. I keep finding information on its toxicity to animals and humans. I'll try to post some links.. should have saved them, but I was in a frenzy last night trying to figure out what is best to buy at this point in time.
oy!

Oh AWESOME (e:Libertad)!!!
I just returned the cedar bags and went over to the pet store, where I found, Carefresh- a brand I saw listed in one of the many sites I researched.
I bought some with high hopes for it being safe and doing a good job. It certainly cost more than the aspen and alpine shavings.. but I didnt care as long as it is a good product.
I am so pleased that you recommend Carefresh!! Your input is *very much* appreciated!

SOrry you have to cut and paste it, but it is called Carefresh if it doesn't work for some reason.

In the woodshop section of an industrial materials class I took in college, I found out that cedar is actually a carcinogen. As the professor put it "there's a reason why the bugs don't like it".

music binge and purgeCategory: music
I've updated my music collection and I am rather pleased with myself, haha.
It had been awhile since I looked for music- I get so consumed in the search that several hours will go by unnoticed. Not a bad thing- just need to save it for a day that I can do that.
I have added new artists to my collection and have had the pleasure of acquiring more songs from some of my favorite artists. Bonus.
I also deleted a slew of music that I just seem to never bother listening to. It almost felt sad.
While I have a pretty cool music selection, there is plenty to be embarrassed about as well. I need to tuck those away into a folder all of its own. Shut up; you have a few dirty beats that get cranked up when no one else is around-- most likely in the car, right? right?!?! Thought so. :)
alright.. in no particular order..
well, the first three are the only ones that I did not have any music from, so I look forward to 'bonding' with the 'new' stuff:
the remaining artists I already have in my collection, but just managed to find more of.. (yay!).. although some are still skimpy- -must keep looking:
--can always use more Aphex Twin, Fischerspooner, Infected Mushroom, Muse and Moby; although just not a priority right now.
I'm looking for some hard hitting aggressive stuff. Not even sure what genre. BT is working right now, but I'm thinking something edgier.
Suggestions of all sorts are welcome.
I'm also looking to add to my "Her Space Holiday" collection.
and to find and buy, Charlie Hunter Trio. good stuff, and my collection has been just begging for his (their) stuff.
Saw Charlie Hunter Trio at Thursday at the Square with a date, "T". The music was entertaining, although I was a bit weirded out with the company I was with. Glad I don't jump into anything with anyone- ever.

(e:james) oh yes, MSI lyrics crack me up. They put it all out there like they dont care, and are just having a lot of fun in the process. Makes me happy.
thanks for the suggestions, (e:metalpeter)! It sure is fun looking for music, different sounds and so forth.

First of all it is very tough to recomened music for people but i will list some heavy bands or at least some bands I know, again I don't know that many.
Deathclock (the band from Metalopoclyps)
Stemm
Hatebreed
Dragonforce
Motorhead
System of a down
LaCuna Coil
Black Label Society
Rob Zombie
Slipknot
Sevendust
There are a lot of great bands out there and I guess the fun part is finding them.

Glad you and the date had a good time. I can't imagine how that blue flame must have looked in 3D. That one monster was so gross looking he really was but as gross as he was the dragon was even cooler looking. I see what the reviewer means about Angelina, but as hot as she looks she does kinda have a plastic look to her. I'm not saying that is bad, I'm also not saying what I would let her do to me. What I'm saying is she looks so unique that I bet that is what makes her look kinda vacant. Or maybe (because of something I don't want to reveal) because of a story point she looks that way on purpose. In anyevent I still say there should have been more nudity and a little more violence and make it an R. Glad you had a good time.
