A 1001 Nights...

Since I have been hovering at 1000 for a long time, I am making this the happy ending to the 1001 amazing adventures I had with all of you in Buffalo. :-)

My adventures continue but I miss you a LOT. I mostly hate it that (e:Paul), (e:Terry) and (e:Heidi) are not down the street anymore and I can't just walk a block to hang out with you whenever. But everything else is going pretty well.

I am really happy to report that that my main workstation is finally Linux and that the central work of my new workplace is mainly conducted on Linux. No one asks me if LaTeX is the polymer that gloves are made of. R, Perl and (to an extent) Python are the main coding languages and no one really looks upon closed-source software kindly.

But before you think things are overtly peachy, I need to admit to the fly...or maybe the cicada in the ointment. I also have three Crapple computers as of writing this post. Two are from work and one, I bought with blood money. You could say that I have sold my soul finally. But really, there was only so much incompatibility-related pain I could take before it became obvious that Crapple was the only sane choice for parsing and processing the output from my windoze dominated teammates (read: M$shit Office suite). I guess biologists just cannot be persuaded to abandon bad habits and I am the only computational member of my primary team. It is so ironic, it's ridiculous, somewhat hilarious and appalling all at the same time.

What else is new? I migrated to G+ mainly because almost all of my new "circles" are on G+ and I still refuse to join facebook. I have gone from comfortably hanging out with my neighbours back to where I don't know them at all. I have a real forest at the back of my flat and I can see deer, foxes and all sorts of birds in a riot of colours. Still walking to work everyday but the occasional sketchy panhandler sighting has been replaced by random wars with hissing geese gaggles who fight for space on the pavement with me.

And yes, no snow. No snow at all (with the exception of *2* snow days this past winter). Lots of green grass and flowers for >10 months of the year. And substantially less cold weather. It has also been good to know that I am really not an indifferent 80 year old anymore and that it is still possible for me to transform into a giddy clueless teenager over someone. I think those are quite possibly the best parts of my continuing adventures.

It is a bittersweet moment but I realize that I am finally ready to move on. Thanks to (e:Paul), my memories are written on silver-lined multiply backed-up secure clouds. I am certain that I will find myself revisiting them ever so often. So long, beau fleuve. You rocked my world and I miss the fantastic sunsets at your harbour. \m/
