Gangsta, Abu Ghraib and Café Oquendo

I love Halloween but this year it definitely hasn't been a priority. With no money and little time, finding a costume seemed impossible. Yesterday I still had nothing and was invited to two parties. I decided not to go to them, because I worked until 7:30 and what could I do in this short amount of time? I told (e:mike) that I wasn't going to the party of (e:timika), (e:nejiffer), and (e:decoyisryan).

As I sat by myself I decided I would at least try and find something in the house and if I couldn't find anything I would at least have given it a shot. Really I don't have much, most of my stuff is packed away and stored at my Dad's. My best option, or so I thought, would to be an Abu Ghraib torture victim. I had an old sheet, which I think was supposed to be black but is now bluish. I got some speaker wire and ran it through my sleeves so it would dangle outside the sheet. Really it looked just ridiculous so I scratched that idea.

I ended up being a Gangsta of some sort and was really proud of being able to pull something off. I think (e:metalpeter) will probably post pics. I went to (e:three)'s company party only because I didn't want to be out that late, they live super close and (e:mike) was there. I feel bad for skipping out on the other party because I really love them and they have great Halloween parties. Had a good time and (e:metalpeter) and I were terrible at beer pong. Thanks for a great party!

I found a new coffee that I am in love with. Actually, I got it at Latina's cause it was cheap. It's called Café Oquendo. It really reminds me of the Cuban coffee I so loved every morning at the convent.

Rumors

Due to the storm, food stamp participants received 73% of their October benefits back on their ebt cards. Somehow this rumor got started that they would lose these benefits if not used by midnight on Monday. They fled to the stores in droves filling up carts and snatching up milk. Chaos was reported at Latina's Food Market. When announced on the intercom that it was a rumor and the benefits would remain for 270 days, some fled, leaving carts filled with food.

Here is a sampling of the rumor...

Elizabeth Feeney: "I thought I was going to lose my food."

Rob Macko: "Who did you hear this from?"

Elizabeth Feeney: "A friend told me his sister told him that she heard it too."

Gotta love rumors.

Moss and Responsibility

Has anyone else noticed green moss on the trunks of trees? I have been meaning to ask this for a while. It doesn't seem right. Is this indicative of disease or weakness in the trees? This green moss is pre Arborgedon and i'm stealing the term from artvoice who stole it from someone else. (e:jim) has spoke about tree health maybe he has an idea? Tree moss seems ok if it were in some dank forrest, but along streets?

At Buffalo State yesterday I noticed all this stuff falling from a tree. I'm thinking to myself not again, but then I notice there is a squirrel fight. They were trying to cause physical injury to each other to get a nut or other morsel from the other's mouth. It was disturbingly violent. It seems like maybe some of the squirrels secret stashes have been disturbed. I think (e:leetee) is concerned about this as well.

Is (e:neckbreaker) a Buffstate student too?

People are asking me to take on roles requiring responsibility that demand commitment. What do you think about taking on more responsibility? Not necessarily job related but for something that you don't have to do. Responsibility makes us stronger beings. Likewise, when getting physically stronger, it also doesn't happen magically. I don't want to bail out or not perform my functions if I accept the responsibility. I have to decide tomorrow.

¡Dios mío! ¿Por qué me has abandonado?

I had to write a sonnet for my class. The instructions were to tell how a future student could receive an A in his class.

UPDATE

A request is made for translation. I didn't translate cause it messes it all up, but here it goes.

Do you want an A in Dr. Neira's class?

First you have to pray to god
You will know more than the chineese
Jesus Christ give me an A
Smart student I will be

Pray to God every day
If you give me an A, I will never sin again
Believe in the father, the son and the holy ghost
It isn't difficult, you will earn much

Those that are closest to God
For certain are the richest
Everyday of the week
Pray with the force of a sister

Nothing more you need
Only God gives us blessings

So yea it sounds dumb in english, but I thought in spanish it was clever. It is sarcastic of course. It kind of plays on a class discussion we had. It isn't an attack on anyone's faith.

Power restored

Power restored! Yay! I'm so exahusted I feel like I could collapse. Sleep has been sporadic. Waking up being cold and have to change the water bottles I put in the fish tank to save the fish. Luckily I still had hot water to fill plastic bottles to keep the fish warm. The bottles needed to be changed every hour at times. I threw out a bunch of freezer stuff, but was able to save a lot by putting it on snow ice outide my window.

Today made a trip out to Williamsville. Got to see Hillary Clinton cruise around in a hellicopter checking things out. Williamsville was pretty bad just because I think they have more trees. Every tree seems to be affected. It really is difficult not to have power and I worry about those who still don't. It is so much harder if you are elderly or have some type of problem.

This has all been very eye opening.

Happy Birthday (e:lilho). I'm sorry to not be able to celebrate with you and everyone else.

I saw (e:decoyisryan) today. He said all three of them were with their families. Good to know they are warm, although they could have power now?

some things

I feel better now. Looking forward to normalcy. Maybe it was all the cleaning I did (not my own) that cleared my mind.

The rain is nice right now, very calming.

Snow soon. I wish I had X country skis to get around in. Maybe some snow shoes too. Winter is not my thing, but I guess I have no choice.

Having off for Columbus Day was nice, but why the hell is this a holiday?

Now I have to get to the impossible task of understanding La Araucana.

What is fair?

I'm starting house cleaning again today after putting it on hold to finish painting the railing. One nightmare is behind me so I'm excited to make money again. Here is a recap. The original paint that I put on wrinkled up. Me not wanting to do a shitty job decided to remove it all and repaint. I told the woman that I didn't want to be paid for removing the paint. She has said that she paid me $230 over a length of time for my work. This $230 was mostly paid for the work I did in preparation before I painted the first time. The railing was a rusty mess! Most of the time that I was working I didn't take any money from her. If I did it would be $20 every once in a while to get me by. The entire time I paid for everything I needed to get the job done, running up my credit card. I told her at the end to pay me what she thinks is fair. Today i get a check for $40. I brought her over cake for her birthday as well as bought her dog treats and what happens to be the dogs favorite toy. It turns out that the paint was most likely lousy paint rather than anything I did wrong. I was proud of myself for not doing a shitty job, but $40 seemed like a slap in the face. This was after her daughter in law offered to get me out of it and her son told her I should be getting paid the whole time. I held my ground and said no, that it wasn't fair. $40 thanks. It would have been cheaper for me if I just paid her off and told her to get someone else to fix it. I don't know maybe it was fair my $40, but it sure doesn't feel like it. It also was stressful to her, neither of us expected this to be a several month process. Ok I'm done, its over!

Being fair is not so easy.

Lower Standards

I just read this article on yahoo about how the Army is lowering their standards in order to meet recruitment goals. It struck me as funny. They are letting people in with lower test scores and certain people with criminal records. Still, fags with mouths can stay home. Its good to know they haven't lowered their standards too much.

Nuclear Orgasm

It is sad and frightening that yet another nation has attained nuclear weapons. I have studied a bit about the US and their race to create the first nuclear arsenal. It makes me wonder if the workers that are developing North Korea's arsenal are also being subjected to harmful radiation. What about the innocent people who live near these plants and dump sites? North Korea believes they need these weapons for their own survival. I would assume like in our own race against time to build the atom bomb, that North Korea is no different. They will also have to deal with the nasty waste that plagues our own area for centuries into the future. When time is an issue as it was in our own quest for the bomb, little is given to proper handling and containment of waste.

Has anyone seen the first report regarding the successful test from the N. Korean News Agency? The woman who is delivering the news to the people looks like she is having an orgasm. It is sort of creepy. The North Korean army also freaks me out. Their marching is so scary.

I'm not too sure that the Bush administration refusing to dialogue with them was the best thing to do. What is so wrong with at least having talks with them. I'm not saying for sure, but maybe this could have been avoided. A deal of some sort could have been made in exchange for access by weapons inspectors into the country to provide assurance that they weren't developing nuclear arms. Now it is too late, but I still think it is time to start the dialogue. Further sanctions, maybe, but talk first. Who knows what they could do now if they are pushed further into a corner.
