Rude
Category: school
I was rude to a classmate this morning... During a break in tax policy class, we're riding the elevator to the floor with the snack shop, he said, "I think this class is just going in circles."

"Oh? How so?"
"It all just comes down to personal values and so we just go in circles about who believes what."
"Hmmm... so how much have you looked at the data behind tax policy?" (that's a focus of the class)
"uh.... yeah... enough..."
I laughed somewhat scornfully and walked away.

In a seven-person class, this is rather uncomfortable. Ooops.

Seriously, dude. You don't want to hear about tax policy because as you said, "I want to be rich someday, so I don't think the rich should pay more taxes." I just love "i got mine, screw you" arguments, even aspirational ones.

Oooh, you get two more than the standard federal set! Nice job, NYS union!
tinypliny - 02/21/11 17:25
that list sounds pretty "American" and not really religious to me.
paul - 02/21/11 15:37
This is so offtopic now considering your original post but my state union observes these holidays. We don't even observe presidents day but rather Lincoln and Washington's birthday separately. That seems so ridiculous to me.

1. New Year's Day
2. Lincoln's Birthday
3. Washington's Birthday
4. Memorial Day
5. Independence Day
6. Labor Day
7. Columbus Day
8. Veterans' Day
9. Thanksgiving Day
10. Christmas Day
11. Election Day
12. Martin Luther King Day

When I applied to Brandeis for grad school, I was amazed at all the holidays they took - full set of Jewish and several Christian holidays that aren't standard days off. The problem with just following a state schedule is that the state schedule already preferences Christian observances. My school district at home still takes the first day or two of deer season. It's all about who your constituents are.
paul - 02/21/11 12:47
Ya UB observes jewish holidays instead. I never got that. It seems totally unpatriotic to me. I can't believe a state run institution can observe religious holidays instead of state ones.

Once you go down that route, where do you draw the line. Especially in aN institution with people from more diverse backgrounds. As the Indian and Asian population of UB grows are they going to accomdate those ethnic and religious groups too? My opinion is that they should simply drop all religious holiday observation and stick with the state holidays.
heidi - 02/21/11 12:13
UB doesn't honor all the state & fed holidays. I'm sure Roswell does.

isn't it? Why do you have classes... this is making me nervous. What if today is not a holiday and I am not in office...

Graduation
Category: school
I graduate May 21. I signed up for senior pictures, paid for the cap & gown rental, and don't expect to have any trouble with classes this semester that would prevent me from graduating. However, I'm scared about that weekend. Jill & Kelly really want to be here and have started putting plans in place to make it possible, but I'm estimating that the likelihood of their actual attendance is about 45 percent. (Six kids, right?) I've asked Uncle Dudley to be here, and gave her a list of nearby hotels, but I'm not feeling too confident that she and her boyfriend will make it. A would come, of course, but I'm trying to not fall back in our old relationship and haven't asked him. So... I'm going to be really sad if I do all this to mark a major accomplishment and no one comes, reinforcing the constant theme of my relationships: don't trust, don't expect.
flacidness - 02/20/11 21:40
That's amazing and funny. Congratulations all the same.
tinypliny - 02/20/11 20:40
I dig boycotting my own graduations and doing something extraordinarily fun instead. :^)
tinypliny - 02/20/11 20:25
I am coming to your graduation. (though I hate going to my own). Get me a ticket! :)

Hedgehog
Category: pets
I met a hedgehog today. It was cooler than the chocolate lab, mastiff, and drug dog.

tinypliny - 02/17/11 23:52
What on earth is drug dog?! Like a drug mule but of the canine variety? Why would you put that in the comparable pet-list to the hedgehog? Is it used as a drug-mule too? How close is it to say, a hamster or a rat as a pet?
heidi - 02/17/11 12:06
It was mad that we woke it up, snorting & huffing. It wouldn't put its pricklies down. Super cute tho.
matthew - 02/17/11 11:16
they are so cute. Was it friendly?
paul - 02/16/11 23:35
Supposedly they are non allergenic.

Me!
Your boots are perfect.

tinypliny - 02/15/11 15:51
lol, totally missed that. I have a top and vest like that and I roll up my buttoned sleeves all the time to show off my stick-like-forearms.
heidi - 02/15/11 14:58
(e:paul) & (e:tinypliny) are wearing the same top!
flacidness - 02/15/11 14:56
I almost picked that top. One of us would to have gone home to change, or someone would've been cocktailed!! ;)
tinypliny - 02/15/11 00:29
nevermind, those are your arms and the antennae are the ears....
tinypliny - 02/15/11 00:28
That is so cool - what are your android holding?
paul - 02/14/11 23:49
Awesome scarf. I didn't see the scarves.
