Bought a House!
So I just accepted a counter-offer and have purchased my first house! Very excited! It's in N. Buffalo on Winston. Now for all the paperwork, inspection, signatures, etc etc!

Awesome dude - congrats!
jenks - 01/29/08 11:06
winston is a pretty street. So is starin, I've learned lately... congrats.
And I just stumbled upon this gorgeous little block behind allen, with a little park in the middle... totally made me want to buy a house.
tiburon1724 - 01/28/08 22:48
hopefully it won't take that long, the house is vacant. The owner was relocated due to her job. Inspection is scheduled for Saturday, appointment with the mortgage broker is scheduled on Wednesday. My apartment lease ends on May 1, so I'm hoping to close in April, ideally. We'll see!

Thats awesome - congratulations. Although for use the time from offer accepted to actually getting possession of the property was like 5 months - so be prepared.
carolinian - 01/28/08 12:16
I live in N. Buffalo, too. Maybe Paul's (e:hertelstrip) is not such a bad idea.

I've been looking into buying a house, and I have the same exact fears/nightmares. The one thing that makes me feel a bit better is that one should also fear giving half one's paycheck to a landlord and never getting any ownership of anything. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
tiburon1724 - 01/28/08 11:20
yeah it's definitely also scary as hell. I literally keep having dreams of not being able to make the payments, dropping out of school, losing my job, and becoming a bum. :/
mrmike - 01/28/08 11:15
Congrats! It is exciting to go and call the landlord to fix something only to realize you got to it, which makes it even more satisfying.

Congratulations! Buying our first house was the scaries and most exciting thing we've ever done! Enjoy the fun.

Volunteerism
Curious if anyone here volunteers in some capacity, and what they do? Looking for something that might be a good fit.
drew - 12/21/07 08:52
Maybe you would like do something with PUSH? That would help people get into homes. Or, the West Side Community Collaborative could get you a gardening/landscaping project that would make a huge difference on the West side with minimal human interaction. If you ask at urban roots they can set you up.
tiburon1724 - 12/20/07 23:07
well I'm supposed to do something that shows I have empathy for others. But of course I really don't :)
Don't deal well with kids or old people so I don't know. What I would LIKE to do is something that benefits the city you know? Like the event Losman held or Brush Up Buffalo I think it's called etc.
drew - 12/20/07 16:25
I know about all kinds of places--what are you looking for?

Bandits are Back in Black
think of it as a wheel of fortune before and after clue.

so the Bandits season is back on!! Looks like the players union thought the league wouldn't really cancel the season so they have now reached a deal. God I hate unions. On a sidenote went to see Lewis Black at Shea's last night with the girlfriend and a couple friends. Good times. Also ate at City Grill on Main, excellent place I really never heard about.

metalpeter - 10/26/07 16:32
Lewis Black was pretty funny last night (even though I was very tired) I also thought the first guy was pretty good to. On Thursday I heard that a a deal might get worked out but couldn't find anything on line I'm glad both sides got an agreement done. I can't wait to find out what the new game dates are. Then hopefully I'll be getting stuff soon about my tickets. "Lets go Bandits" . I think that having a season this year was really important not having one would have hurt the league more then anyone would think it would. I used to have season tickets a long time ago and then didn't go for a couple years and now have a season ticket again. Since I'm right on the glass I don't see myself giving up my seat any time soon now. I do have pictures I've taken at the games on some of by blogs if you haven't seen them.

No Lacrosse! :(
Category: sports
So the NLL season has been cancelled due to a labor dispute!! BUMMER!!! Over the past couple years some of the best sporting events I've attended have been Bandits games and I was just about to buy season tickets for this year. I finally move to Buffalo and this happens. Wow....to think this could be the feeling x1000 one year soon only for the Bills :/
metalpeter - 10/16/07 17:39
I can't Believe that I was just at the Bandits site like two days ago, when did this happen. Some people all ready bought their season tickets. I was supposed to be getting stuff in the mail about renewing mine any day now. What I will say is that the last time this happened they did wind up working things out and had a season. It seems like with the league expanding and getting on TV some now would be a bad time for both sides to do this, why wasn't this worked out at the end of last year. I have faith that they will both get smart and work something out, or at least I hope so.

Darien Lake
So, I've noticed that all the major bands perform at Darien Lake. Makes sense I guess, in between Buffalo and Rochester, and I'm sure the park gives some incentives as well. Too bad more aren't at HSBC. I've heard it's a nightmare going to shows there though, anyone have any feedback from shows they've attended?
Such as....if you're back in the 400 or 500 sections how far is that, really - too far to see anything? And how is access? Being in the middle of nowhere I bet it's worse than trying to leave a Bills game 10x over. I really want to go to the Projekt Revolution Tour, but if it's going to be a major headache I won't bother!
metalpeter - 07/24/07 20:29
This is my theory on the concerts. I think things like Family Values and Warped tour and some bands like Blink 182 was famous for this try to play only outside in the summer. I know a lot of those tours are by live nation and I think they try to do mostly outdoor venues.
jason - 07/24/07 14:31
You shouldn't be afraid to go to Darien Lake to see a show. It's a fun venue. You sit in the grass seats and can get a view that's about as good as a view from the bleeds at HSBC.

That being said, they DO have vid screens, and a good sound setup, and I've always had a blast.

Sure, shit-tons of people park in the same basic lot, and you have to take the same roads back home, but it's not worse than leaving a Bills game, not by a long shot, in my experience.
