I smell books burning already

Gov. Gary Locke’s proposal to close the Washington State Library in Olympia as part of an effort to fix a shortfall of $1.2 billion in the state’s biennial budget has public librarians worried. The suggested closure in October would make Washington the only state without a library agency and could forfeit the $3 million in federal LSTA funds the library receives annually for the development and support of public libraries.

Faced with a projected $9.2-million deficit, the Salinas, California, council voted 6–1 September 21 to close all three of the city’s public library branches in the first half of 2005. Officials also plan to close six recreation centers and reduce the city payroll by 71 full-time positions—nearly half of them library staff.

A reduction of more than $19 million in county funding to the Buffalo and Erie County (N.Y.) Public Library will force its central library and all 51 branches to close their doors in January, library officials have announced. The proposed 2005 county operating budget, released November 5, reduces funding from $24.2 million in 2004 to $5.2 million in 2005, triggering an additional loss of $2.8 million in state library aid.

Richmond, California, to Close Branches, Halve Library Staff (25%) - 04/02/2004
The city council of Richmond, California, voted March 30 to close the city s two branch libraries as part of a budget cut of $9.2 million in response to a projected $35 million shortfall.
