You would not believe this if you saw it.

The windows are there, and the messages keep bleeping, but I can't see the text. I might have to skip the iPod and just get a new computer. What can I get for $60? ;-)

MineMineMine

My first home computer [inlink]paul,4124[/inlink] was the Mac LC III. I worked on 100s of computers long before I ever imagined buying one. At Bitstream I worked on all kinds of Macs and PCs to test their digital fonts in different configurations. That was fun. When I was offered a job at PC Week, I asked if there was any chance there'd ever be a Mac on my desk if I worked at PC Week. The director of publishing was good to his word - although it took three years. I couldn't wait that long, so I bought one for myself in the early '90s and promptly named the hard drive "MineMineMine." I got hell for that from Mark when he moved in.

My youngest brother (exactly one year younger than (e:Paul)) was the only kid still living at home when my parents finally splurged on an IBM PC Junior circa 1985. Definitely should have bought a Mac. It was so painful watching my Dad trying to format church bulletins and newsletters and member directories on that thing I eventually "donated" my LC III to his church - pre-loaded with QuarkXpress and Filemaker Pro. That probably didn't look so good when he eventually left that church after 14 years. Oops. Stupid software registration splash pages!

I could go on and on about computer hand-me-downs, but I have to get to Macworld! I'm finally going to buy myself an iPod [inlink]twisted,126[/inlink] this year. I asked for and got two $30 (the family limit) gift certificates to the Apple store for Christmas. Hee haw - it's about time.

Being grown up is so overrated

"Aunt Lisa, you're not really a grown-up, right?"
"Um, it doesn't seem like it."
"Good. Then you can be the technical wizard on our team to spy on the grown-ups to see what they really do."

Sounds like more fun than anything else I had lined up this week.

One other classic family moment: After Dad's traditional reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, he announced he and Jean had gotten all the grandkids a special group gift this year: A goat. They didn't seem as surprised as I would have been at that age.

fun fam

It's nice to have a family that doesn't mind looking like complete idiots. It sure makes doing the family calendar a lot more fun.

p.s. - if my laptop crashes one more time I'm going to kill myself.

If you answer yes please read on.........
If you answer no 2 times you may stop reading.
1. Do you have a place to shower???
ex: friends house, gym membership, ymca..
2. Need a vehicle as well as housing?
3. Can not afford Housing and Vehicle costs together??
4. Like outdoorsy independant lifestle???
5. Want a return on your investment???
6. Cost of san francisco rent got you down??
7. Cant afford the move in costs of san francisco?
8. Deposit and first and last months rent to much?

Well you could buy my VAN for less than most move in costs for an Apartment.
It is a 1991 Dodge "Pacific Coach" edition. Automatic with 126K. van runs excellent. Registered and smogged. Insulated to keep you warm. I have slept in this van in tahoe during winter. I do not recomend this as you could die in really cold weather. I had all the right gear to keep me warm. A good sleeping bag is all you would need for san francisco. Curtains and blinds to keep you private. Custom curtain that snaps up in seconds for front window. It has a sink, but no fridge or stove. I think you get the idea.
TV, VCR, and mood lights just stopped working. Not sure why. I think it is a just a fuse. Price lowered due to this. $3500 or $291 a month for one year. i will not accept monthly payments. Price is $3500 OBO thanks for reading.

but be prepared for...

city life

I had an hour to spare, so I walked down to City Hall to get a copy of my deed. Living in the city is so convenient!

Object-Oriented Memory

This weird thing has started happening since I moved out of my last place. Now when I have to give my old address, I'm reverting to a really, really old previous address that starts with the same number. I've probably said "1022 Doris Court" about a million times over the past 3 years. But now, I start saying "1082..." which is the street address for my first apartment in Boston - 1082 Commonwealth Avenue. It's like my mind is seeking for a previous address (not current addresss) which starts with 10...and that's what comes out.

Or, I'm getting senile. That's entirely possible.

I don't think you can appreciate the significance of this without knowing just how far back 1082 goes. Here are all my addresses since then:

1082 Comm Ave.
7 Carol Ave.
89 W. Cedar St.
488 Columbus Ave.
81 Worcester St.
135 Winchester St.
279 Vinton St.
876 Fellsway
59 Forest St.
299 Fellsway West
143 Church St.
1809 Golden Gate Ave.
1257 Regent St.
1022 Doris Ct.

Yeah. I move a lot. But really - I've said "1082... I mean, 1022" 3 times. It's weird.

So (e:Paul) - when are you going to start REMEMBER Boston and REMEMBER San Francisco?

negotiations proceeding

I just signed and faxed our counter-counter offer, which is closer than we've gotten so far. I think I'm actually hoping we don't get this one, but I don't really have a good reason for that. So I'll let fate decide.

Meanwhile, I'm first runner up for my first choice (on my own). That's WAY closer than I thought I'd get. I'll know in two days if I get to wear the crown. I guess I'm just more comfortable buying on my own and not having to answer to anyone else.

And if that's not enough to keep track of, the offer date for my fallback property is tomorrow. I have an offer written up and ready to go. I'm really feeling like it's out of my hands whether I'll pull the trigger or not. Weird.

It would be good to have a place to call home come Oct 31st though. That much I know.

p.s. - hmmm, 17791 views in 1 year. That seems pretty good. I guess I was pretty prolific in the early days though, so that's prolly why.
