For people of a certain age living in Toronto, the city of Buffalo once had a special aura. When I was a teenager in the 1940s Toronto was a capital of Puritanism and even movies were banned on Sundays. Buffalo shone like the gleaming promise of freedom, just over the US border. On a weekend when I was 13 three friends and I went there by bus, stayed in a hotel, drank one or two beers each, watched a strip show in a theatre and went home to tell our stories, arousing the envy of our less adventurous contemporaries.
