Valentine's Day Dance with the Skiffle Minstrels at Lindy Fix

Valentine's Day Dance with the Skiffle Minstrels at Lindy Fix

image

On Valentine's Day, Tuesday February 14th 2012, Lindy Fix will host a very special event: a Valentine's Day Dance with the Skiffle Minstrels!

With Swing Buffalo's award winning half-hour swing lesson, you and your valentine will have no problem loosening those ankles for a fun night of frolicking on the floor. What better way to spend the holiday than with your sweetie in your arms, cuttin' a rug to some of the honky tonkiest and boot skootin'est home grown music in Buffalo?

Don't have a date? Come on in! This dance will be a great place for singles to mingle as well. Our lesson is a great ice-breaker because we rotate partners (though you and your valentine may choose to stay out of rotation if you so desire). And there's no experience necessary either! We will give you the steps that will allow you to move to the music.

This special event will be $10 per person (or $18 for every valentine couple). $2 discount for students! If you're coming, go to our facebook event page and let us know.

On Tuesday January 17th, Swing Buffalo presents "Intro to Lindy Hop". Lindy Hop is a vintage form of Swing Dance made popular during the swing era (30’s & 40’s), originating from the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. If you've found a groove with East Coast Swing and would like to learn this more versatile and dynamic dance, the one that all the inspirational dancers out there on the floor do, you can pre-register for Intro to Lindy Hop at a huge discount. Also, the class includes $4 off your Lindy Fix admission (the dance and beginner lesson after the class). At the request of the venue proprietor, please see the website for pricing. As always, re-takes are free. If you've taken Intro to Lindy Hop before, you can participate in the class for free (though you'll still have to pay to attend Lindy Fix). We'll cover the awesome styling that will make you stand out on the dance floor and work on the feel of your connection so that everyone will want you as their partner! So pre-register today. Email SwingBuffalo@gmail.com to find out how. Sponsored by SwingBuffalo.com, winner of the 2011 "Best Dance Classes" by Buffalo Spree. Classes will be taught by Rob & Zoë Leach. Not partner necessary. Beginners welcome. If you're not sure you're ready for the plunge into Lindy Hop, don't forget, we always have a beginner East Coast lesson at Lindy Fix every Tuesday (http://LindyFix.com). If you start attending now, you might even be ready for Intro to Lindy by January 17th!

Swing Buffalo, an award winning community dance organization, is excited to announce it’s annual workshop, Rhythm Shuffle. Join us September 16th-18th at the Polish Cadets Hall for an all-around awesome weekend that is jam-packed with local bands, great guest DJ’s, and world-class swing dance lessons taught by two of the best professional swing dancers in the U.S. Instructors Nick Williams, guest choreographer for the hit television show So You Think You Can Dance, and Sylvia Sykes, affectionately known to the dance world as “Swing Goddess”, are flying in from the golden state to impart their extensive knowledge in the art of the historic jazz dances known as lindy hop and balboa, two of the most popular dances from the swing era.

The classes, taught for all level of dancer from beginner on up, will be followed by multiple nights of dancing and spectacular performances and competitions to some swingin’ live music. The Storyville Players will start off the weekend at the welcome dance and Dr. Jazz and the Jazz bugs will perform Saturday night. Three of a Kind will slow it down for the late night party with blues covers.

Fun extras include retro/vintage clothing vendors Cats Like Us, Miss Josie’s antiques, and lunch with Llyod’s Taco truck.

Buffalo Bals

Balboa Workshop with Valerie Salstrom
Featuring an evening dance with the Tin Roof Jazz Band
April 9th

SwingBuffalo and the UB Swing Dance Club present "Buffalo Bals", a Balboa Swing Dance Workshop with Valerie Salstrom, International Balboa Champion from Cleveland, OH. Balboa is a form of swing dance documented as far back as 1915! It was born on the west coast and reached its Hey Day during the Swing Era of the 30's and 40's. It was kept alive long enough for it to be rediscovered in the mid to late nineties during the swing resurgence and is now danced all over the world. Known for its versatility to song speed, it can be danced to the fastest big band songs out there without breaking a sweat. Couples seemingly float across the floor in a close embrace. Dancers were even known to hold and sip drinks while they danced.

Balboa is becoming popular in Buffalo and is danced every week at Lindy Fix. Come join in the fun as we hold a 1-day workshop taught by Valerie Salstrom, organizer of one of the largest balboa events in the world: "All Balboa Weekend". We will have a day of classes followed by an evening dancing to the Tin Roof Jazz Band! You get 4 classes and a dance with a great live band for $35 (students: $25). Registration is at-the-door only.
