This afternoon I had the pleasure of running into (mrmike) at our local Wegmans. It was a nice reminder that the online community extends into meat space.

Too Drunk To . . .

Once upon there was a band called the Dead Kennedys. The first single I bought of theirs was "Too Drunk to Fuck." This is an acapella cover of the song by Camille who at one point in her life was in the bossa nova punk cover band Nouvelle Vague. Technically, I think this is an acapella cover of the Nouvelle Vague cover of the Dead Kennedys original.
I've been a big fan of Mark Vidler and
Go Home Productions http://www.gohomeproductions.co.uk/ for years. I think I think he is my favie mash-up artist. Here is one of his latest efforts. Enjoy it before it's gone

A Pleasant Surprise

Recently the Lovely Lettuce posted about our neighbors. http://estrip.org/articles/leetee/49087.html and not seeing the nicer side of them. Well today, I did.

The previous administrations of our house left us with evergreen shrubs and landscape timber in our front yard. I got rid of the shrubs a couple of weeks ago. And today's project was getting the landscape timber into the backyard so I could decide what to do with them.

The previous admin's used round telephone pole like timbers. As I was struggling with a timber pretty much as tall as me, our neighbor (the male part of the couple Lettuce wrote about) came out and asked me if I needed help. This was a very pleasant surprise.

By that time, I was covered in dirt so I asked him "Are you sure you want to? You'll get dirty" He said that he didn't mind if he did.

So he helped me carry one from the front to the back. And in the middle of carrying the second large timber, my bad shoulder popped. We got it to the backyard. And I told him I would deal with it some other day. I didn't want him to do all my heavy lifting.

I thanked him for helping. He said it was just a small thing. I said to me it was more than just a small thing and that I really appreciated it.

Given everything that has happened, it was a very pleasant surprise that he would take the time and effort to help me.

That's what I'm listening to right now. Years and years ago, someone I knew was a big Superchuck [wikipedia]Superchunk[/wikipedia]fan and he recommended that I get this cd. This is the second time I listened to it this year. and I still like it.

Almost 40 years after Stonewall . . .

Today, I heard on the news that Gov. Paterson wants to legalize gay marriage http://uk.reuters.com/article/usTopNews/idUKTRE53F5I220090416

Almost 40 years after Stonewall, I still amazed that New York State hasn't legalized gay marriage.

Hopefully, Paterson will make it happen.

Industry Giants

The ironically titled "Industry Giants" by Superdrag [wikipedia] Superdrag [/wikipedia] http://www.superdrag.com/news.htm came in the mail today. I recently posted a video from the cd (uncutsaniflush),48266

It just might be the best Superdrag ever. This is the first cd by the original line-up in this century. It is confirmation of how important Brandon Fisher's guitar playing was to the Superdrag Sound.

I was already a fan of this band when I realized that Superdrag was more or less a friend of mine's old band without him in it.

Browser Ball

Google has been encouraging people (yes, software developers are people too) do useful and useless stuff with JS in Google's Chrome browser. This one is called Browser ball http://experiments.instrum3nt.com/markmahoney/ball/

My guess is that the uber-geeks will be underwhelmed. But as a punter, I think this is neat.

This one is from the developer:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3al8prbfK5o[/youtube]

This one is a bit more complicated.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZjhSjWRHsI[/youtube]

Browser Ball works well in Firefox 3.0.7 in Linux. It's reported that it works with Firefox 3.0.7 on all platforms.

Superdrag http://www.superdrag.com/
is a band that (leetee) and I know personally from our time in Knoxville. We are both big fans. They are a great live band that doesn't always make good videos.
[box] some of the clouds are not clouds. some of those jets pose death threats. it's coming around. coming around. some of your rights stolen outright. sometimes lights are not lights. the consuming fires of hell burn this place to the ground. burn it right to the ground. i just write songs. i don't carry a gun. i want peace and safety for my innocent sons and wife. i just love God i don't trust in man. armed with the truth against the wickedness at hand. yeah. if you wanna usurp the power. i'll be ready in a half an hour. i'll give my life for that. are the devils ever nervous? do they deserve the death they serve us? i'm still not certain of that. sometimes brains are mundane. entertained and restrained and sealed up tight. all the aspartame and the video games and the drugs in the food keeping you subdued so you'll never recognize who put out the lights. put out the lights. i just play guitar. i can't stop the war. i want peace and safety for the kids in kandahar. if you love peace and you love mercy you're bound to cause a little controversy. yeah. if you wanna usurp the power. i'll be ready in a half an hour. i'll give my life for that. are the devils ever nervous? do they deserve the death they serve us? i'm still not certain of that. we've gotta usurp the power. the devil seeks who he may devour. keep your life intact. the liars in his service conspire to make me nervous. i am certain of that. Our Toyota Prius [search]Prius[/search][wikipedia]Prius[/wikipedia] has been at Fuccillo Toyota [google]Fuccillo Toyota[/google] since Tuesday. It needs almost 2000 dollars worth of work - the catalytic converter [wikipedia]catalytic converter[/wikipedia] is failing and that is why it failed the NYS inspection and why the check engine mysteriously came on and off in a seemingly random way.
I tried the second release candidate of vlsoho-5.1 [google]Vector Linux[/google]. A big thumbs down. I couldn't get my wireless card to work. Vector Linux is Slackware-based [google]Slackware[/google] so I thought that if I could get it to work in Slackware I could get it to work in Vector. Wrong!!!
