Paul's Journal from 03/2007

03/02/07 02:31 - 34ºF - ID#38325Category: workA day at the office
Wow, I just wrote this huge journal but when I plugged in my mouse , my laptop short circuited and restarted. I think I was at the point where I was angry about the prospects of retiring in a cubicle.

The only sentence that survived was:

It is a huge waste of my abilities to have me make a CD-ROM which sells christmas cards. I just don't get it. It is like hiring an auto engineer to change your oil.

It is probably better I did not publish it.

We ate at Gin Gin's in Chinatown on sheridan. I am fascinated at how the once oh so white KenTon is getting all multi-culti. Someone told me this story once about a suburb of Toronto that was the same way. They were saying that the city became trendy again and the canadians moved out of that suburb and back to the city. Then the suburb became like the ethnic hub.

03/03/07 12:25 - 32ºF - ID#38339Category: foodRemembering a Life Before Food
Remember when my journal was a bit crazier. The years before I started only posting about food. It sees like getting food is now become the only social activity in my life. I have to keep reminding myself that soon winter will be over and I will do stuff like go on walks, go hiking, bird watching, etc.

I had lots of meetings yesterday. Turned out that we are going to be making a Roswell version of estrip for kids and young adults. I a excited to see how it turns out but this means I a going to be crazy busy from now until I leave for San Francisco.

The view from up top of Roswell is interesting. I bet it looks so much better in the summer.
0307/RoswellView0303.jpg

The have all this missions furniture in the lobby. While I think it is pretty to look at, I find that that particular style is really standoffish and uninviting, I wonder why they went with it.

0307/RoswellParkMissionFurniture0303.jpg

And for food.
For lunch we ate at the Delta Sonic on Main Street because they gave us all $3 coupons. They are kind of like a truck stop. My $5 sandwich came to $2. While I think the food was pretty ok, I don't like the atmosphere of eating at a gas station. At first I thought it was cool that you operate the touchscreen to order the parts of your sandwich but now I think it just feels like they were to cheap to hire ore workers and that you do the work for yourself.
0307/DeltaSonic0303.jpg

Last night we tried to go to Casa Di Pizza but it was crowded so we headed over to Kosta. We were actually two cars worth of people so it was tricky trying to coordinate somewhere to eat. I am always a big fan of Kostas because they have the tastiest octopus.

0307/OctopusAtKostas0303.jpg

I did not die from eating the bayleaf in my clam chowder. When we were kids e:mike was so scared of bayleaves.
0307/BayLeaf0303.jpg

I drank white wine and ended up with a headache again. I wonder if I have some reaction to the sulfites.

0307/WhiteWIneAtKostas0303.jpg

This is what I felt like afterwards. I ended up going to bed with a headache and everyone else went out.

03/03/07 14:30 - 32ºF - ID#38342Category: protestDanish Protestors Clash with Police

The clashes began after police evicted squatters from an abandoned building that has served as a center for anarchists, leftists and punk rockers.

More than 500 people, including scores of foreigners, have been arrested since the riots started Thursday. Authorities said 207 were arrested early Saturday following overnight clashes in which demonstrators pelted police with cobblestones and set fire to cars.

The wikipedia article about the "youth house" has already been updatedlink
This is what makes wikipedia so great. It is already updated to include the most recent of recent history.

0307/450pxUngdomshuset0303.jpg

FRom the wikipedia article

In 1999 the building was set for sale to the highest bidder by the municipality following controversy on the renovation of the building and a refusal from the inhabitants to pay the rent agreed upon in the original contract. Which prodded the users of the building post a large banner on the fascade with the message: "For sale together with 500 autonome, stone throwing, violent psychopaths from hell.".

Fromlink

The building at the centre of the recent riots, known as "the youth house," has been viewed as free public housing by young squatters since the 1980s. The eviction had been planned since last year, when courts ordered the squatters to hand the building over to a Christian congregation that had bought it six years ago.

Vandals even covered Copenhagen's famed Little Mermaid statue with pink paint, though it's not clear if that's linked to the riots. In the past the statue has been beheaded, doused in paint and been blown off her perch with explosives.

Europe is so extreme. I love it. I think that americans can't get so crazy because first of all the police would just kill the protestors and second of all because we are so used to long term stability at home.

Here is a youtube video for calling the youth's into action

Here are photos from the buildinglink

The is a ton more info in the wikipedia article's wikipedia external links section.

Police began clearing the building early (about 0700 local time, CET) Thursday, March 1st 2007.

I never thought of targeting this market. I should write an OOP javascript and AJAX book for teens.

0307/PhpForTeens0303.jpg

But why the pretty-boy? Maybe there are more girls programming nowadays but I have to say I never see them in the computer programming section in the bookstore. Maybe they are so smart they don't need books.

Maybe it's for gay programmers. I looked at the book because of him but I still think they would do better with a cute girl on the front or even a spaceship or a race car.

If I was straight I would be embarassed to have the book lying around the house.

How does this websitelink have the right to sell my picture. I guess I probably signed away the rights when they did the Buffalo new article a couple years ago?

0307/PaulVisco0305.jpg

Do you ever have postpartum depression with a project you didn't really like at first but then you worked on it feverishly and it became an obsession.

I have been working on this large scale employee evaluation system since the beginning of time it seems. Mostly, because I had to consistently wait for things to be ready and because i am not the owner of the data.

Anyways, it was so boring at first. I really hated the project and then slowly as it grew it became kind of fun. Now that the project is wrapping up I am having a hard time being done with it, because I keep feeling like I could polish it up some more.

I am sure they will find things that need to be done with it once it "hits the shelves" tomorrow so I am not that worried.

The next project up is porting e:strip over to roswell software. That should be a much bigger project. The fun part is I only have about 3 weeks to do it!!!! What is up with project management here?

Ona nother note, apparently e:terry is most fertile.

NOT taking a bath may improve a man's fertility - even though it might not endear him to his partner.link

e:matthew was looking at houses online and saw this one on Summer. A bit out of our price range at $699,900. I find it ridiculous that the taxes are supposedly assessed at $5,544.00. That means that they are asking way more than they bought it for. As an example, our taxes on our $200,000 house are the same. The taxes on a $700k house are more like $17K.

03/08/07 21:19 - 20ºF - ID#38401Category: downtownAnother Media Dump From Downtown
Last night, e:lilho and I took the subway to and walked home from the downtown Buffalo Athletic Club. Now that is dedication to being healthy (and to eye candy - which there was none of) It was so freakin' freezing I cannot even describe the feeling of really cold wind blowing down main street on a dark winter's night.

0307/LilhoAllenStSubway0308.jpg

On the way home we had brought no money and had to walk. We couldn't even stop anywhere because we didn't even brings cards. It was strange to feel like I had nothing even if it was just during a 20 minute walk home to the mansion. I do not like the feeling of not having access to food money at all.

We jealously peaked in the window at spot and starred at all the mactoppers with yummy treats.

Today I made up for it by going with my work buddies and e:megan over to Chris' Deli at 395 Delaware Avenue. They were packed to the point we waited but it was totally worth it. I have never seen such tasty sandwiches.

I got the jerk turkey.
0307/JerkTurkey0308.jpg

Everyone else had yummy stuff too.

0307/TurkeyMultigrain0308.jpg

0307/Hamburger0308.jpg

When we got back jon had a blue screen of death on windows XP. It was so sad. I hate windows. In fact, I hate it so much that today I installed cygwinlink so I can have a bash shell on my windows box at work. No more stupid "dir" I was so sick of typing "ls" and having the computer say no.
0307/BlueScreenOfDeath0308.jpg

Does anyone else have a secret love of kicking the crusty june snow? It is that part snow, part asphalt and cement chip stuff that never goes away until way late after winter is over. It is basically dirty snow that is combined with so many particles that it acts as a sort of adhesive between them. It is hard as rocks and when it breaks it cracks like glass sometimes. It is really fun to kick it.
0307/JuneSnow0308.jpg

This pole didn't like winter very much. Imagine if your skin peeled that much from weather exposure.
