They suck. Who, you ask? The Sabres for not ponying up the cash to keep at least one of their two captains, and the players for bowing down to the almighty dollar. It still amazes me that athletes get paid infinitely many more times than professions that "count" (doctors, teachers, etc), but whatever.

This, coupled with the Bills "cash to cap" policy makes me hate being a Buffalo sports fan. Larry Quinn/Tom Golisano said that the Sabres would have to make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs next year just to turn a profit if they continue the direction they're heading (player salaries).

Really? Really?? Every frigging game is sold out, the team is #1 in merchandise sales, and business is that tenuous?

I call shenanigans.

Free Agency makes sense what with it being a free country and all but it does make it pretty lousy for the fans. It's hard to get behind and root for a bunch of mercenaries. I guess we all just have to pull the wool over our own eyes and suspend belief in order to enjoy the season.

And no, (e:james), it isn't 25/year. I wouldn't blame anyone for taking that deal though, lol.

I will admit that I have no idea how the money works. But what I do know is that it is very complicated. I know that different cities have different deals with the Arena's and concessions and I'm sure it is reasearchable. But don't forget that the Arena has to make money, so do the venders. In terms of Merchendising the same thing is true all those jersy's the sell I'm sure Rebox gets a certain cut. Then of courss The sabres, the arena and the concessions have to pay there workers. I think one of the issues is how much revunue teams really gain in a small market or even a larger market. The NHL isn't like the NFL (this number may have changed since it was years ago) Where the TV contract gives every team 1 Million dollars above the salery cap. I don't know how the Hockey Deal works but with Versus and NBC only covering some games and the playoffs it can't be anywhere as good as the NFL. Most Hockey games are shown on TV in the local Markets.

I didn't hear all of the press conference today. But that being said what happens if you put all this money into these two guys and the both get hurt or shit the bed and have a crappy year for what ever reason. You tied up all your money and can't afforid anyone to take there place. That is why (football) the 49ers where bad for so many years. I heard a guy say on TV that they had people who warn't playing anymore that counted towards the salary cap (Steve Young was one of them). I would have liked to see both guys stay and get another run for the cup. But on the other side of that why didn't Biere just take what they offered him towards the end of the season, he even said if the sabres gave him that deal then he would have taken it. So then why didn't he go back and say guys lets do the deal that you offered me before the playoffs. My Theory is that Free Agency has killed Team Loyality. Well ok greed has killed team loyality. You get players who mainly care about the money instead of the team and now with cities like Buffalo the same can be said about the city. We Just gave away our two favorite sons to other teams.

Didn't they match the NY Rangers offer to Brier but he turned it down because he would rather live in New York for 5 Million a year....

And with all the tax subsidies too... yikes. To get that much money from the local and state government they should really be required to disclose all the financial details of their operations.

Seeing Drury with the Rangers jersey on yesterday is like seeing your ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. You're glad to see she's happy but baby didn't we almost have it all?

But then later on you hear stuff from other people that you had no idea was going on and actually helped lead to your breakup: Industry source says Drury agreed to contract last fall. And then it's time to start blasting songs that are less sappy and more angry...
