Out There

I've been wondering how it would sound to say this: Greenfern is now available for purchase at Talking Leaves on Elmwood.

Cool, right? I dropped off a copy about a week ago and got the word today that they would put it on their shelves. Hoofed it over there right quick and dropped off a handful. It was all very official-seeming, what with the signatures and the publishing vocab and all.

The next step is marketing. Joel has graciously given permission to use his cover artwork for flyers, etc. so expect to see it around soon.

They're in

The mags are here, waiting to be sent out in the world to do their great work.

This is the fun part -- figuring out what to do for marketing, how to get the thing in stores, etc. And by 'fun', I mean 'mystifying'. Lots to learn.

On its way

The process of actually getting this magazine printed has turned out to be a bit of a pain, but only because the printer's hours are 9-5 on weekdays. You know, the hours that a lot of people work. Delivering the files (way too big to be emailed), picking up a proof, making revisions, dropping them off, and getting a revised proof becomes a major endeavor when you have to ask off work every time.

The good news is that the green light has been given and we'll have the mags in hand next week. We're doing some funky post-printing stuff which will take a little time, so with any luck next weekend we'll be able to start the "hey, you wanna sell our magazine" project.

Book fair?

Anybody know anything about the Buffalo Book Fair? Apparently it's on a Friday this year, and in a different location. I can't seem to get the Contact page to work -- anybody have the straight dope?

Join the revolution.

I don't know if I understand the mentality behind the development of open source software, but I'm sure glad it exists. All of the greenfern work is done on open source (with the exception of the OS). Open Office, GIMP, Firefox, gmail, etc. I have no complaints to date -- you'll have to let us know how it looks.

What the heck in kerning anyway?

So it looks like there's a typographers convention in Ye Olde B-Lo this summer: . Now, I'm not really a big fonts guy (I couldn't even make it through that Helvetica documentary), but any event where masters discuss their craft has to be pretty cool, right?

The banner on the website features this guy:

Plodding

A fairly slow week in the GF world. Waiting on a few folks to get back to me on various matters, and then we will be ready to rock, and also to roll.

I've started poking around on the tuberwebs for info on grants related to this kind of project. It seems there are people and organizations who have money and want to give it to other people and organizations. <russian accent> What a country! </russian accent>.

So, what is it?

I started this estrip account to chronicle adventures in publishing.

Greenfern Magazine will very shortly be available. It's a literary magazine, featuring fiction, personal essays, and columns by Buffalo writers and traditional illustration by artists from our fair city. The concept is to create an opportunity for local amateur word-smiths to publish and for readers interested in the scene to hear what the new voices have to say.

Estrip seemed the natural choice for bloggery on the process, our experiences, etc. It's an exciting endeavor, and I look forward to sharing my journey with you all.

The New Hotness

Check out the new logo.

I tried a little gold-on-burgundy action for the profile pic. Not sure if I like it, but worth a shot.

Busy busy

Bought some new work shoes recently, and they are definitely broken in now.

I spent much of the sunny afternoon walking around downtown for a few Greenfern-related tasks, including a meeting with Joel of The Enthusiast. If you haven't seen his magazines around (enthusiastprint.com), I recommend them highly.

He's got a little office set up in the Visitors Center (aka old Market Arcade) for a few weeks, and it's worth a stop in to see what a proper design shop looks like.
