Miasteczko N. (Town N.)

Recently, (e:enknot) was quoted as saying that (e:strip) is boring.

Here is a Polish song to honor that observation. It's by Shakin Dudi. The song begins with the chant "Boredom, Boredom" in Polish. Nuff Said.

Zareason Hex-core Linux Box

After using Linux boxes almost exclusively for almost 10 years, I've finally done it. I've bought a Linux box instead of buying a Windows box and installing Linux on it.

I bought a Limbo 6000A with an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T processor and 6 gigs of RAM from Zareason . They custom build Ubuntu boxes. I ordered it with Ubuntu Studio.

When darkness was falling today, the UPS man delivered it.

And so far so good. I ordered it with a wireless card. And amazingly enough, it worked even though vanilla Ubuntu Studio doesn't support any wireless (apparently, wifi drivers affect latency. And latency is bad for audio and video production; so, no wireles for Ubuntu Studio)

My only complaint is that the /home doesn't have its own partition. I just took it for granted that it would. It's not a big deal to me to change it so. Not having a dedicated /home partition negates some of the flexibility of having a Linux Box. And a Linux newbie would probably be afraid of fucking up their box by changing the partition scheme. On the other hand, Windows users are used to having system and data files on the same partition.

The default settings are decent.

I think I'm going to have lots of fun with this box.

Dwojka Rzymska (Roman II)

Krzysztof Komeda is arguably Poland's best jazz pianist of the 1960s. In the Western world, he is perhaps best known as the composer of the lullaby from the film Rosemary's Baby.

This performance is from 1964.

Kalifornia ponad wszystko (California Uber Alles)

As I wrote earlier (e:uncutsaniflush,53202) I am a huge fan of Kazik Staszewski. I mentioned that stylistically he is all over the map.

Today's Polish Song is an example of that. It is a cover of the Dead Kennedys' California Uber Alles by Kazik Na Żywo (Kazik Live). For some reason, Kazik decided to do metal/hardcore covers of his own songs live. He also did some old school covers. This is one of them.

Prohibition

Kazik Staszewski (the English wikipedia page isn't that good since I stopped maintaining it, sorry) is my favorite Polish musical artist and he may be my favorite musical artist period. Stylistically he is all over the map - everything from Polish folk to metal with stops at rap and hip hop and Kurt Weill and Tom Waits. His music is both political and funny.

He is very prolific so it is very hard for me to decide where to start with Kazik. I reckon that an accessible English language song would be a good place to start.

"El Dupa" is a side project that includes members of Kult and other bands that Kazik has recorded with.

The song "Prohibition" was written as a protest against the banning of liquor sales in the towns that the Pope was visiting in Poland in 1999.

Kazik loves John Bonham and John Bonham samples show up in his songs when you least expect them.

F Bomb Grammy Nomination

This is such a fucking cool song that I've been grooving to for a couple of months. I'm amazed that it is up for two Grammys - Song of the Year and Record of Year Ain't that some shit.

I remember when records were banned because the word "fuck" was included.

To quote the MC5 "Kick out the Jams, Mother Fuckers!!!"

Cee Lo rocks.

Karuzela cz 2

I really like Karuzela Z Madonnami (Carousel With Madonnas) (e:uncutsaniflush,53190) Over the years, many Polish singers have covered the song.

Today's Polish song is a cover of song by one of my favie Polish new wave bands Maanam .

This version was performed that Opole Festival in 2005. It is ok. All it does is make me want to listen to the original. The sound is not typical of what I think Maanam sounds like.

Karuzela z Madonnami (Carousel With Madonnas)

Ewa Demarczyk is my favorite female vocalist. She sings poetry. I love her intensity.

I think I first heard this song when I was 10 or 11 and I fell in love with it. The song was first released in 1966. This version is from 1970.

The music is by Zygmunt Konieczny. The lyrics are fragments of a poem by Miron Białoszewski

Wsiadajcie, madonny madonny
Do bryk sześciokonnych ...ściokonnych!
Konie wiszÄ… kopytami nad ziemiÄ….
One w brykach na postoju już drzemią.
Każda bryka malowana w trzy ogniste farbki
I trzy są końskie maści: od sufitu od dębu od marchwi.
Drgnęły madonny
I orszak konny
Ruszył z kopyta.(...)

MigajÄ… w krÄ…g anglezy grzyw
I lambrekiny siodeł,
I gorejÄ…ce wzory bryk
Kwiecisto-laurkowe.
A w każdej bryce vis à vis
Madonna i madonna
W nieodmienionej pozie tkwi
Od dziecka odchylona
— białe konie
— bryka
— czarne konie
— bryka
— rude konie
— bryka
Magnifikat!

A one w Leonardach min,
W obrotach Rafaela,
W okrągłych ogniach, w klatkach z lin,
W przedmieściach i niedzielach.
I w każdej bryce vis à vis
Madonna i madonna.
I nie wiadomo, która śpi,
A która jest natchniona
— szóstka koni
— one
— szóstka koni
— one
— szóstka koni
— one
Zakręcone!

English translation (Faun Fables):

Just step in madonna, madonnas.
And get in madonna, madonnas.
All the patient horses are waiting,
with their hoofs above ground they are hanging.
And the carriages are restless,
everyone is painted matching all the horses,
looking like the colors of the ceiling,
of the oak tree, of a carrot.
A stir from madonnas,
a stampede of hundreds
bolting off their hoofs.
Circling in fire in their roped-in cages,
once they were of games
and throughout every dancehall
with a will of vigor, burning flowers.
And in each carriage arm and arm,
madonna and madonna.
From childhood bent up,
she is stuck inside an unchanging time.
White horses carriage,
black horses carriage,
red horses carriage,
magnificent!
Just as a gift for the
complicated eras that are too sad,
everyday on Sundays
working for the midnight holy masses.
And in each carriage arm and arm,
madonna and madonna.
And no one knows which is asleep
and which one is inspired.
White horses carriage, black horses carriage,
red horses carriage, magnif
