The Saturn Club

So interesting on the inside. I wish I could afford to be a member. Maybe someday.

Buffalo Maritime Museum

(e:Terry) and I headed over to the maritime museum for their open house. You have probably seen some of their collection at the inner harbor during the summer.

The cool thing is they have all of these 10 week courses where you build your own boat. I think I would enjoy it but in the end I would have a pretty heavy boat compared to a fiberglass kayak which I could more easily tote around. Still I think the experience might be something interesting. I snapped a shot of each class offered to remind myself.

The thing that stuck out most to me was the vacuums, but that is just because I am obsessed with vaccuums.

Pedestrian Draw Bridge To Unite Buffalo Inner and Outer Harbor

I am so tired of having to go all the freaking way around to around Dug's dive to get to the outer harbor. Sure, if you are in a car, the way over the skyway is convenient and quick, but for pedestrians and bicyclists, the path all the way around is long, industrial at best, and grueling. Especially for pedestrians.

It so annoying when you finally arrive at the outer harbor and you can see the inner harbor and downtown buffalo are about 200 ft away but about an hours walk back. I understand that building a chicago street auto bridge would be expensive but why not a tiny pedestrian draw bridge.

After extensive searching I found a place with a similar project in Duisberg, Germany and they did build a pedestrian draw bridge

The sign starts out saying, "When you want to open up a once industrial harbor for the people, you need to build a bridge..." I think that sums up exactly what we need here in the Buffalo harbor. I wonder what it would take to get such a project started.

The sign continues on to say that bridge was the idea of Stuttgart Professor Jörg Schlaich and that he worked with the Duisburger Firm Stahlbau Raulf.

Here are some more pictures from the wikipedia article.

I am also willing to settle for an even less expensive zip line, lol.

Where cars go to die

I know every city has these but damn this is an eyesore on the way out to the outer harbour by bike. Maybe once the Chicago Street bridge is completed in 2050 I wont have to see it anymore.

Welcome to a dead city

The dead trees lining the subway station at the new harbor/HSBC look even worse now. Nothing like dead EVERgreens with a crow to spruce up the place. If I went and chopped them down would it just be extreme community gardening?

Tugboat Rebecca Lynn Pushes Oil Tanker Down the Canal

(e:terry) and I were on a bike ride that included squaw island yesterday. When we got there, a giant oil tanker was bring pushed through the canal. I didn't even know giant oil tankers came through here. Nor did I realize just how big the exhaust pipes on those are. You can see it at the end of the video.

Imagine if that thing spilled. The falls would be destroyed forever.

Here is the half of a bikeride worth of tracking data. I forgot to turn it on during the way there.

Playing on the tracks by hannah's frosty treats

I can believe those tracks are becomming suburbs. The giant sign says, suburban houses, urban lifestyle. We used to play on those tracks when I was a kid so much
It was a great way to get around and hang out unsupervised before we had cars. All the tracks around the suburbs connected.

We ended up covered in bugs as it was the day of flying ants. It was even worse in the streets. I have never seen then so thick.

All in all it was a 16.5 mile trip with a Carmel frappachino at the best buy plaza in tonawanda.

Atop the Mayflower

The other day (e:tinypliny) took us up on the mayflower's roof. The view was great. I noticed The JCC has a huge solar panel farm. I makes me want one on the back of our roof and garage.
