Pride Parade

Don't forget about the pride parade parade tomorrow. It stars at one and goes from Kleinhans to bidwell park via elmwood. Server Died from Overload

So (e:shawnr) asked me last night if the server could deal with lots of visitors from far away if he put a link to his journal on other sites. I thought it would be ok. Well on boing boing,

there were apparently too many visitors. I think it is because boingboing is a news syndication hub and the links were flying in from everywhere. I guess it is time to start caching because thousands of vistors per hour, is too much for the mni VPS.

Unfortunetaly, (e:shawnr) is gone now, and the only way to deal with this was to shut down elmwoodstrip.com altogether. It currenlty redirects to google's homepage. I don't know how else to deal with it because th referer links are all over the place. From a million rss feeds. I tried rewriting from the htaccess file when the users looked up shawnr only and it worked at first but soon enough, people started removing the u=shawnr from the end of the url and it got killed again. Eventually, I had to just redirect all elmwoodstrip.com info away from the site.

Someday, I would like to test the site out on a really robust server. For now just visit elwmoodstrip.org.

Browser War

The browser war begins. The site has begun tabulating the number of visits per browser in a most obvious way. You can see the percentages in the upper right hand corner of the site. The posiiton might move, but it is constantly analyzing the number of visits and the type of browser they come from. It elimates bots and other erroneous visits pretty well. In the future I may move it to just a percentage of the toal from firefox, ie, and safari. Right now collect IE 7, IE 6, IE 5.5, IE for mac, firefox for all, safari, netscape, konquerer, and opera.

Sidewalk Chalk

(e:mike) and (e:matthew) and I went sidewalk chalking. On the way we saw (e:jeremy) and (e:drchlorine)

Hopefull we chalked enough places for people to see them. I was hard to do without (e:jill) , afterall she was really the magic behind the chalk designs.

Updates Again

I programmed almost non stop from noon until midnight in order to complete some major upgrades to the site code. I apologize to any of you that had any errors or slowness during the update. I hope that now it is much faster for everyone, even the poor dial up people. Honestly, I just don't know how people live with dial up.

Update Number 600

I have been updating tons of backend stuff that you never see, but I just added another update that is immediately useful to everyone. The epeeps and online guests list at the bottom of the top ten list updates itself every 20 seconds, so even if you don't refresh the page so that you can always know who is online.

Updated the user statistics page

You can get to the user statistics page by clicking on the # when you are logged in. This presents you with a table of all users, their aim online status, links to their journals, their site online status, how many views and how many entries they have written. You can sort by any coloumn by clicking on the column title. If a row is highlighted in red it means they are an unconfirmed user, if they are highlighted in yellow it means they are confimred by have written zero entries.

Many new speed fixes

You should find that (e:strip) is much faster today than it was during the beginning of the week. I added a lot of speed fixes by revamping any code left from 2003, and anything that was incompatible or redundant with the new server.

I also moved the RSS feed reader to a news link after help above.

Updated Cell Phone Functionality

You finally can log in on a cell phone and post without having to use email. You can also read entries, read an e-poem based on the journals called, "A Million Excuses" and see who else is online. You can also read the chat and read your (e:message) when logged in.
